Chhanv Foundation
The Chhanv Foundation is a non-governmental organization (NGO) set up by Laxmi Agarwal and Alok Dixit in order to help the survivors of acid attacks. It runs cafés known under the brand Sheroes in Agra, Lucknow, Noida and Udaipur, which raise funds for the treatment and rehabilitation of attack survivors. During the COVID-19 pandemic in India, COVID-19 pandemic, it set up an online retail platform for survivors to sell handicrafts directly. The NGO received the Nari Shakti Puraskar and in 2020 stated it had helped over 100 survivors of acid attacks. Foundation The Chhanv Foundation was set up by Laxmi Agarwal and Alok Dixit in order to help the survivors of acid attacks, who are mostly women. Agarwal is herself a survivor of a 2005 attack. Laxmi Agarwal
Laxmi Agarwal (born 1 June 1990) is an Indian acid attack survivor, a campaigner for rights of acid attack victims, and a TV host. She was attacked in 2005 in New Delhi at the age of 15. In 2019, she was honored with the International Women Empowerment Award from the Ministry of Women and Child Development, the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation and UNICEF for her campaign of ''Stop Acid Sale''. In 2014, she received the International Women of Courage award at the hands of First Lady Michelle Obama. The movie ''Chhapaak'' is based on her life and stars Deepika Padukone in her role. Early life and the attack Laxmi was born in New Delhi in a poor family. In 2005, tragedy came when Laxmi was 15 years old and an 11th-grade student, she was approached by a man working in her neighbourhood, Naeem Khan, who was 32 years old. Sheroes Hangout
Sheroes Hangout is a cafe and community in India, set up by the Chhanv Foundation and run by survivors of acid attacks. The cafe aims to increase awareness of acid attacks and empower acid attack survivors. There are currently two cafe locations in Agra and Lucknow. History The first cafe, located in Agra, was opened in 2014 by Alok Dixit of Stop Acid Attacks, a nonprofit based in New Delhi. Since that time, the cafe has expanded to open a second location in Lucknow. The cafe began as a crowdfunded project, and it operated with a pay what you want model. Early employees did not know how to run a restaurant, so they opted against setting prices, in case they made mistakes. Alok Dixit
Alok Dixit is a journalist turned social activist, fighting for freedom of Internet in India. He is the founder member of Save Your Voice, a movement against Internet censorship in India and Stop Acid Attacks, a campaign against acid violence. Dixit is creating a nationwide awareness among young people through his writings and peaceful protests for a free and open Internet. He is advocating for the protection of freedom of expression and human rights by engaging communities and supporting voices worldwide.
