Chevra Kaddisha Cemetery, Sacramento
Chevra Kaddisha Cemetery (English: ''Holy Society''), later known as Home of Peace Cemetery, was the first Jewish cemetery in California founded on November 12, 1850, by the Sacramento City Hebrew Association, and was once located at 33rd at K Streets (present-day 3230 J Street) in the East Sacramento neighborhood of Sacramento, California. The cemetery closed around 1924, and is no longer standing. It is the location of a strip mall, there is no historical plaque. The site is listed as a California Historical Landmark (number 654-1), by the California Office of Historic Preservation since July 28, 1958. History Moses Hyman, a merchant from New Orleans that settled in Sacramento in 1849, had donated to the Jewish Benevolent Society for the establishment of the cemetery. The term ''Chevra kadisha'' (Modern Hebrew: חֶבְרָה קַדִּישָׁא) gained its modern sense of "burial society" in the nineteenth century. It is an organization of Jewish men and women who see to it that the bodies of deceased Jews are prepared for burial according to Jewish tradition and are protected from desecration, willful or not, until burial. The Sonora Hebrew Cemetery, also known as Pioneer Jewish Cemetery, is an inactive Jewish cemetery founded in c. 1851, and located in Sonora, California. This was the first Jewish cemetery in the Gold Rush region. History The cemetery was founded by the Hebrew Benevolent Society and is mostly the graves of European-born Jews who emigrated to Gold Country. The first burial is recorded in 1853 as Hartwig Caro, age 17; however it's possible there was burials starting in 1851. Local Jewish community leader Mayer Baer (1821–1907), and then his son Julius Baer (1876–1972) maintained the cemetery up until 1972. As of 2022, there are only 44 visible grave sites.
