Cheung Chau Public Pier
Cheung Chau Public Pier () is a public pier in Cheung Chau, New Territories, Hong Kong, located in Praya Street, with Cheung Chau Ferry Pier located between it and the Cheung Chau Typhoon Shelter. It is used for loading and unloading of goods, and running kai-to operation between other islands. The pier was built in 1950s. In 2002, the government decided to reconstruct the pier due to long-time deterioration of the pier. The reconstruction work was completed in 2005. Cheung Chau
Cheung Chau (lit. "Long Island") is an island southwest of Hong Kong Island. It is nicknamed the 'dumbbell island (啞鈴島)' due to its shape. It has been inhabited for longer than most other places in Hong Kong, and had a population of 22,740 . Administratively, it is part of the Islands District. Geography Geographically the island is formed from two mostly granite masses joined by a tombolo. With an area of , the island is therefore "long", hence the name as translated from Cantonese is "Long Island". Thus, it is redundant to say "Cheung Chau Island". The island is dumbbell-shaped, with hills at the northern and southern ends and the settlements concentrated in between. Kai-to
The kai-to, sometimes kaito or kaido () is a type of small, motorised ferry that operates in Hong Kong. They are usually used to serve remote coastal settlements in the Outlying Islands, Hong Kong, territory's outlying islands.: "Cargo junks of the type still known as kai to or "local ferry" had long plied between NT ports, Hong Kong, and places in the Canton Delta: see e.g. the list of ports in the papers at GN 170 in HKGG, 17 November 1866. Cheung Chau Ferry Pier () serves the island of Cheung Chau, New Territories, Hong Kong. It is located on Praya Street within the Cheung Chau Typhoon Shelter. History The pier, designed by the Port Works Division of the former Public Works Department, was officially opened on 28 April 1960. It was substantially expanded in 1986 and 1987. Renovation and improvement works in 2015 saw the passenger waiting area expanded, ventilation improved, and a new canopy constructed at the pier entrance. Services Sun Ferry operates a regularly scheduled route to Central Pier No. 5 in Central. The service runs "ordinary" (slower) ferries, as well as faster catamaran vessels.
