Chesley William Carter
Chesley William Carter (July 29, 1902 – January 14, 1994) was a Canadian Member of Parliament representing the riding of Burin—Burgeo and a senator for Grand Bank, Newfoundland and Labrador. Biography Born in Pass Island, Hermitage Bay, Newfoundland,''Volume one, p. 363, Encyclopedia of Newfoundland and Labrador'', . Carter, educated at Church of England School, Pass Island and Bishop Feild College, St. John's served in the Royal Newfoundland Regiment from 1917 to 1919. In 1941 he joined the Canadian Army to fight in World War II and discharged with the rank of Major in 1946. Carter entered politics in 1949, following Newfoundland's entry into Canadian Confederation, and was elected to the House of Commons as a Liberal in the 1949 federal election. Burin—Burgeo
Burin—Burgeo was a federal electoral district in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1949 to 1979. This riding was created in 1949 when Newfoundland joined the Canadian Confederation. It was abolished in 1976 when it was merged into Burin—St. George's riding. It initially consisted of the Districts of Placentia West, Burin, Fortune Bay-Hermitage, and Burgeo and LaPoile and all the unorganized territory bounded on the North and West by the District of Grand Falls, on the South by the Districts of Burgeo and LaPoile and Fortune Bay-Hermitage, on the East by the Districts of Trinity North, Bonavista South and Bonavista North. 1949 Canadian Federal Election
The 1949 Canadian federal election was held June 27, 1949 to elect members of the House of Commons of Canada of the 21st Parliament of Canada. The Liberal Party of Canada was re-elected with its fourth consecutive government, winning 191 seats (73 percent of the seats in the House of Commons), with just under 50 percent of the popular vote. It was the Liberals' first election in almost thirty years not under the leadership William Lyon Mackenzie King. King had retired in 1948, and was replaced as Liberal leader and Prime Minister by Louis St. Laurent. It was the first federal election with Newfoundland voting, having joined Canada in March of that year. It was also the first election since 1904 in which part of the remaining parts of the Northwest Territories were granted representation, following the partitioning off of the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan. Newfoundland and Labrador (; french: Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador; frequently abbreviated as NL) is the easternmost province of Canada, in the country's Atlantic region.
