Chesapeake Energy Capital Classic
The Chesapeake Energy Capital Classic (also known as the Charleston Capital Classic and formerly as the Toyota Capital Classic) is the name of the in-state rivalry between the Marshall University and West Virginia University basketball teams, the Marshall Thundering Herd and West Virginia Mountaineers. Chesapeake Energy is the title sponsor of the game. The game was last played during the 2015–2016 season and no further games are currently scheduled. History The basketball series was first played in 1929 (1974 for the women), but they didn't start playing annually until 1978. In 1992, they started to play their annual game in West Virginia's capital city of Charleston. WVU's campus is in Morgantown, West Virginia and Marshall's campus is in Huntington, West Virginia. The two universities are the only Division I programs in the state, thus creating a natural geographic rivalry. West Virginia Legislature
The West Virginia Legislature is the state legislature of the U.S. state of West Virginia. A bicameral legislative body, the legislature is split between the upper Senate and the lower House of Delegates. Friends Of Coal Bowl
The Friends of Coal Bowl is the name given to the Marshall–West Virginia football rivalry. It is an American college football rivalry game played by the Marshall Thundering Herd football team of Marshall University and the West Virginia Mountaineers football team of the West Virginia University. The game was sponsored by the Friends of Coal, a coal industry trade group. Planned to be a seven-year series, the Friends of Coal Bowl was organized by the West Virginia Coal Association at the urging of West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin. The first game of the most recent series was played in Morgantown, West Virginia at Mountaineer Field on September 2, 2006, a 42–10 victory for the Mountaineers. 2011–12 West Virginia Mountaineers Men's Basketball Team
The 2011–12 West Virginia Mountaineers men's basketball team represented West Virginia University during the 2011–12 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Mountaineers, led by fifth year head coach Bob Huggins, played their home games at WVU Coliseum and were members of the Big East Conference. They finished the season 19–14, 9–9 in Big East play to finish in eighth place. They lost in the second round of the Big East Basketball tournament to Connecticut. They received an at-large bid to the 2012 NCAA basketball tournament where they lost in the second round to Gonzaga. Bob Huggins
Robert Edward Huggins (born September 21, 1953) is an American college basketball coach. Nicknamed “Huggy Bear,” he is currently the head coach of the West Virginia Mountaineers men's basketball team. Huggins previously held the head coaching positions at Walsh College (1980–1983), the University of Akron (1984–1989), the University of Cincinnati (1989–2005) and Kansas State University (2006–2007). He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2022. One of only six coaches ever with 900 or more career victories, Huggins has been to 24 total NCAA tournaments, including 23 in the last 26 seasons. He has led his teams to nine Sweet Sixteen appearances, four Elite Eight appearances, and two Final Four appearances (1992 with Cincinnati and 2010 with West Virginia). Lewis Joseph "Dan" D’Antoni II (born July 9, 1947) is an American former basketball player and current head coach for the Marshall Thundering Herd men's basketball team. He was previously an assistant coach under his younger brother, Mike D'Antoni, with the NBA's Phoenix Suns, New York Knicks, and Los Angeles Lakers. Playing career Born in Mullens, West Virginia, D'Antoni played college basketball at Marshall University from 1966–1970. He was the Thundering Herd's starting point guard from 1968–70. He led the Herd with a 17.5 scoring average in 1968–69. In 1990, he was inducted into the Marshall University Athletics Hall of Fame.
