Cherry Natural
Cherry Natural (born Marcia A. Wedderburn, 1960) is a Jamaican dub poet, author, motivational speaker and self-defense instructor. She has published three books of poetry and in received the Mutabaruka Award for Best Spoken Word Poet at the International Reggae & World Music Awards in 2019. Early life Cherry Natural was born April 20, 1960, as Marcia Alrica Wedderburn in Saint Andrew Parish. Her father nicknamed her 'Cherry' because of her skin tone as an infant and as an adult added 'Natural' as a nod to holistic living. She spent the first six years of her life in Darliston with her grandmother Hilda, who influenced Cherry's interest in storytelling. Career Cherry's poetry focuses on the everyday experiences of Jamaican life. Louise Bennett-Coverley is among her influences. Darliston
Darliston is a settlement in Jamaica. Darliston is a town in Westmoreland Parish in western Jamaica. It is located east-northeast of Savanna-la-Mar. In 1991 the population was 1,435 (2007 estimate 1595). Principal economic activities include the production of breadfruit and livestock. Louise Bennett-Coverley
Louise Simone Bennett-Coverley or Miss Lou (7 September 1919 – 26 July 2006), was a Jamaican poet, folklorist, writer, and educator. Writing and performing her poems in Jamaican Patois or Creole, Bennett worked to preserve the practice of presenting poetry, folk songs and stories in patois ("nation language"), establishing the validity of local languages for literary expression. Early life Bennett was born on 7 September 1919 on North Street in Kingston, Jamaica. She was the only child of Augustus Cornelius Bennett, the owner of a bakery in Spanish Town, and Kerene Robinson, a dressmaker. After the death of her father in 1926, Bennett was raised primarily by her mother. She attended elementary school at Ebenezer and Calabar, continuing to St. Simon's College and Excelsior College, in Kingston. Mervyn Eustace Morris OM (born 21 February 1937) is a poet and professor emeritus at the University of the West Indies, Mona, Jamaica. According to educator Ralph Thompson, "In addition to his poetry, which has ranked him among the top West Indian poets, he was one of the first academics to espouse the importance of nation language in helping to define in verse important aspects of Jamaican culture." Biography Mervyn Morris was born in Kingston, Jamaica, and studied at the University College of the West Indies (UWI) and as a Rhodes Scholar at St Edmund Hall, Oxford.
