Cherokee High School (North Carolina)
Cherokee High School is a Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) grant high school located in Cherokee, North Carolina and administered by the federally recognized Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. They have their base in Cherokee. The school was originally housed in a 1950s/1960s building. It moved to a new facility constructed for it, which opened in 2009. Cherokee High School is part of the Cherokee Central Schools System. It is the only 9–12 high school on Qualla Boundary, and shares a campus with Cherokee Elementary and Cherokee Middle School. Accreditation The school is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. Cherokee ( chr, ᏣᎳᎩ, translit=Tsalagi) is a census-designated place (CDP) in Swain County, North Carolina, Swain and Jackson County, North Carolina, Jackson counties in Western North Carolina, United States, within the Qualla Boundary land trust. Cherokee is located in the Oconaluftee (Great Smoky Mountains), Oconaluftee River Valley around the intersection of U.S. Route 19 in North Carolina, U.S. Routes 19 and U.S. Route 441 in North Carolina, 441. Cherokee Central Schools (Cherokee: ᏣᎳᎩ ᏧᎾᏕᎶᏆᏍᏗ ᏚᏓᏥᏍᎬᎢ ''tsalagi tsunadeloquasdi dudatsisgvi'') is a school district in Cherokee, North Carolina, consisting of a single campus holding buildings serving grades K-12 and the administration office. Eastern Band Of Cherokee Indians
The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI), (Cherokee language, Cherokee: ᏣᎳᎩᏱ ᏕᏣᏓᏂᎸᎩ, ''Tsalagiyi Detsadanilvgi'') is a Federally recognized tribe, federally recognized Indian Tribe based in Western North Carolina in the United States. They are descended from the small group of 800–1000 Cherokee who remained in the Eastern United States after the US military, under the Indian Removal Act, moved the other 15,000 Cherokee to American West, west of the Mississippi River in the late 1830s, to Indian Territory. Those Cherokee remaining in the East were to give up tribal Cherokee citizenship and to assimilate. They became US citizens. Qualla Boundary
The Qualla Boundary or The Qualla is territory held as a land trust by the United States government for the federally recognized Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, who reside in western North Carolina. The area is part of the large historic Cherokee territory in the Southeast, which extended into eastern Tennessee, western South Carolina, northern Georgia and Alabama. Currently, the largest contiguous portion of the Qualla lies in Haywood, Swain, and Jackson counties and is centered on the community of Cherokee, which serves as the tribal capital of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. Smaller, discontiguous parcels also lie in Graham and Cherokee counties, near the communities of Snowbird and Murphy respectively. Amanda Crowe
Amanda Crowe (July 16, 1928 – September 27, 2004) was an Eastern Band Cherokee woodcarver and educator from Cherokee, North Carolina. A graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, her work has been widely exhibited and is held by a number of museums. Crowe dedicated much of her career to teaching and training the next generation of Eastern Cherokee artists. Early life Crowe was born on July 16, 1928, in Murphy, North Carolina. Goingback Chiltoskey (April 20, 1907 – November 12, 2000), also written Goingback Chiltoskie, was an Eastern Band Cherokee woodcarver and model maker, "one of the most celebrated Cherokee woodcarvers of the Craft Revival era." Early life James Goingback Chiltoskie was born in the Piney Grove community of the Qualla Boundary in 1907, the son of Will and Charlotte Hornbuckle Chiltoskie.
