Aria (russian: Ария, Ariya) is a Russian heavy metal music, heavy metal band that was formed in 1985 in Moscow. Although it was not the first Soviet band to play heavy music, Aria was the first to break through to mainstream media and commercial success. According to several public polls, Aria ranks among top 10 most popular Rock music in Russia, Russian rock bands. Their sound resembled that of NWOBHM bands, for which they were dubbed the "Russian Iron Maiden" in the media. The band has most of its lyrics written by professional poets, Margarita Pushkina and Alexander Yelin commonly, and not by its band members. Since the band was founded, several of its founder members have gone on to form bands of their own resulting in Aria becoming the root of the so-called "Aria Family". Heavy metal (or simply metal) is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, largely in the United Kingdom and United States. Sergey Sergeevich Popov (born 20 September 1959) is a Russian musician, guitarist and songwriter of Russian heavy metal band Aria. Before joining the Aria, he was the guitarist of the heavy metal band Master. Biography Sergey Popov was born on 20 September 1959 in Moscow. He graduated from high school in 1976. In 1981 graduated from Moscow Electrotechnical Institute of Communications. The guitar started playing from the age of 13, participated in the Institute's groups. Maxim Udalov
Maxim Lvovich Udalov (russian: Максим Львович Удалов, born June 16, 1966, in Moscow, USSR) is the drummer of the Russian heavy metal band Aria. In his early career, Udalov participated in Chorny Coffee and Metallachord, where he met and befriended guitarist Sergey Mavrin. Together with Mavrin, Maxim first joined Aria in 1987 and played drums on Geroy Asfalta (1987), but he left the band two years later due to ongoing conflict between the musicians and the band's manager Victor Vekshtein. Alexander Maniakin replaced Udalov. Aria soon dismissed Vekshtein and started their own company ARIA records. Even though he wasn't an official member, he remained in Aria as a sound engineer and a session drummer. He played drums on Aria's 1998 tour when Maniakin was injured with a broken hand.
