The Montenvers Railway or Chemin de fer du Montenvers is a rack railway line in the Haute-Savoie department of France. The line runs from a connection with the SNCF, in Chamonix, to the ''Hotel de Montenvers'' station, at the Mer de Glace, at an altitude of . Overview The line is long and has a track gauge of . Mer De Glace
The Mer de Glace ("Sea of Ice") is a valley glacier located on the northern slopes of the Mont Blanc massif, in the French Alps. It is 7.5 km long and deep but, when all its tributary glaciers are taken into account, it can be regarded as the longest and largest glacier in France, and the second longest in the Alps after the Aletsch Glacier. Geography The glacier lies above the Chamonix valley. The pressure within the ice is known to reach at least 30 atmospheres.
