Cheltenham Racecourse Railway Station, Adelaide
Cheltenham Racecourse railway station was located on the Outer Harbor line, serving Cheltenham Park Racecourse in Adelaide. History The station opened in 1895 as Cheltenham, serving both rail passengers and race-goers. In the early 1910s a siding with a step-down platform was provided east of Cheltenham Parade to provide direct access to the racecourse. This siding was used on race days only and closed a few decades later. In 1959, an island-platform station opened 500 metres outbound from the original station and was named Cheltenham. The original station was renamed Cheltenham Racecourse, and was restricted to raceday services only. On 21 February 2009, Cheltenham Park Racecourse closed to make way for new housing developments, and in June 2012, the station was demolished. Cheltenham, South Australia
Cheltenham is a suburb of Adelaide, South Australia. It is located on Kaurna Land in the City of Charles Sturt. Geography The suburb lies between Port Road and Cheltenham Parade, which form its southwest and eastern boundaries respectively. The suburb is split in two by the Outer Harbor railway line. History Cheltenham Post Office opened on 8 February 1897 and closed in 1910. In 1923, Holden Motor Body Builders established a site known as the Holden Woodville Plant in Cheltenham. Three years later it had expanded to and was employing 5,500 people. The plant attracted a lot of people to live in the area and especially in the adjacent suburb of Woodville through the 20th century. However, Holden progressively moved its operations to its Elizabeth plant through the 1980s, leading to the closure of Holden Woodville Plant. Outer Harbor Railway Line
The Outer Harbor railway line is a suburban branch line in Adelaide, South Australia. It runs from Adelaide station through the north western suburbs to Port Adelaide and Outer Harbor. It is 21.9 kilometres in length, and shares part of its run with the Grange line. It is operated by Adelaide Metro. Since 2016, the line has been used as a shuttle for cruise liner passengers heading for Adelaide, with additional services provided. Adelaide Railway Station
Adelaide Railway Station is the central terminus of the Adelaide Metro railway system. All lines approach the station from the west, and it is a terminal station with no through lines, with most of the traffic on the metropolitan network either departing or terminating here. It has nine platforms, all using broad gauge track. It is located on the north side of North Terrace, west of Parliament House. The Adelaide Casino occupies part of the building that is no longer required for railway use. Cheltenham Park Racecourse
Cheltenham Park Racecourse was a horse racing track located in the suburb of Cheltenham in Adelaide, South Australia, between around 1921 and 2008. History The Port Adelaide Racing Club began thoroughbred racing at the course and in 1921 the club bought the site on which the course stands for £25,000. Administration of the course was taken over by the South Australian Jockey Club in 1975. The racecourse was also once served by now-demolished Cheltenham Racecourse railway station on the Outer Harbor railway line. In November 2007, the SAJC sold the racecourse land for A$85 million for a new housing development. It was proposed that the proceeds of the sale be used to help fund the Victoria Park Racecourse redevelopment. However, following the decision to abandon racing at Victoria Park, it was decided to use the money for further development at the Morphettville Racecourse. St Clair is a suburb of Adelaide, South Australia, and administered by the City of Charles Sturt. St Clair is geographically located with in the Hundred of Yatala, and was first recorded as the name for the suburb on 6 November 2012 by the Surveyor General of South Australia.
