Fantagraphics (previously Fantagraphics Books) is an American publisher of alternative comics, classic comic strip anthologies, manga, magazines, graphic novels, and the erotic Eros Comix imprint. History Founding Fantagraphics was founded in 1976 by Gary Groth and Michael Catron in College Park, Maryland. The company took over an adzine named ''The Nostalgia Journal'', which it renamed ''The Comics Journal''. Alternative comics cover a range of American comics that have appeared since the 1980s, following the underground comix movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Alternative comics present an alternative to mainstream superhero comics which in the past have dominated the American comic book industry. Love And Rockets (comics)
''Love and Rockets'' (often abbreviated ''L&R'') is a comic book series by the Hernandez brothers: Gilbert, Jaime, and Mario. It was one of the first comic books in the alternative comics movement of the 1980s. The Hernandez brothers produce stories in the series independently of each other. Gilbert and Jaime produce the majority of the material, and tend to focus on particular casts of characters and settings. Those of Gilbert usually focus on a cast of characters in the fictional Central American village of Palomar; the stories often feature magic realist elements. The ''Locas'' stories of Jaime center on a social group in Los Angeles, particularly the Latin-American friends and sometime-lovers Maggie and Hopey. Hernandez Brothers
The Hernandez brothers, also known as Los Bros Hernandez, are the three American cartoonist brothers Mario (b. 1953), Gilbert (b. 1957), and Jaime Hernandez (b. 1959). The three were born in a Mexican-American family and grew up in Oxnard, California. In the 1980s they gained fame with their comic book '' Love and Rockets'', a prominent series in the early alternative comics scene, and which drew from a wide range of influences, including mainstream and underground comics, punk rock, and Mexican-American culture. Gilberto Hernández (born February 1, 1957), usually credited as Gilbert Hernandez and also by the nickname Beto (), is an American cartoonist. He is best known for his ''Palomar''/''Heartbreak Soup'' stories in '' Love and Rockets'', an alternative comic book he shared with his brothers Jaime and Mario. Early life Gilbert Hernández was born and grew up in Oxnard, California to a Mexican father and Texas-born mother. He had five brothers and one sister, raised by their mother and grandmother, as their father was rarely around. Mario Hernandez (born 1953 in Oxnard, California) is an American writer, artist, and sometime publisher of comics. He is one of the Hernandez brothers, along with his younger brothers Gilbert and Jaime, with whom he co-created the acclaimed independent comic book '' Love and Rockets''. Biography As children, Mario (the eldest of six children) and his siblings were voracious comic readers, a habit encouraged by their mother, who had loved comics during her own childhood.
