Checkfield
Checkfield is an American eclectic music ensemble from San Diego, whose style skilfully blends various genres, notably folk, classical, pop and electronica, though their music is commonly mis-categorised as New Age. Checkfield was founded by Ron Satterfield and John Archer, who first met in 1970 at Mesa College. They reunited to work together in 1977, making home recordings and playing live locally. They released their first album, ''Spirit'', in 1982, and then signed to American Gramaphone, who released four albums between 1986 and 1992. The most commercially successful of these was ''A View from the Edge'' (1990), which hit #15 on the Billboard Top New Age Albums chart.Billboard Allmusic They released a retrospective on the Gallery label in 1997. American Gramaphone is an American record company based in Omaha, Nebraska. It is best known for releasing Chip Davis' new age solo and Mannheim Steamroller albums. Eclectic Music
In music theory and music criticism, eclecticism refers to the use of diverse styles, either distinct from the background of an artist using them, or from culturally bygone eras and movements. The term can be used to describe the music of composers who combine multiple styles of composition; an example would be a composer using a whole tone scale variant of a folksong in a pentatonic scale over a chromatic counterpoint, or a tertian arpeggiating melody over quartal or secundal harmonies. Eclecticism can also occur through quotations, whether of a style, direct quotations of folksongs/variations of them—for example, in Mahler's '' Symphony No. 1''—or direct quotations of other composers, for example in Berio's ''Sinfonia''. San Diego Mesa College (Mesa College or Mesa) is a public community college in Clairemont Mesa in San Diego, California. It is part of the California Community Colleges and the San Diego Community College District. It is the largest community college in the city of San Diego and the 16th largest community college in the state. Pausa Records was a record label, active c. 1975–1986, which mainly issued jazz albums. The company's name came from the fact that it was from the United States division of the Italian record company Produttori Associati (PA-USA.) In Italy, Produttori Associati was best known for soundtrack albums from Italian films. The label also released a few recordings by Italian progressive rock artists such as Maxophone. New Age is a range of spiritual or religious practices and beliefs which rapidly grew in Western society during the early 1970s. Its highly eclectic and unsystematic structure makes a precise definition difficult.
