Cheap Kisses
''Cheap Kisses'' is a 1924 American silent drama film starring Jean Hersholt as a famous sculptor. This was the first film made by screenwriter C. Gardner Sullivan through his new production company, C. Gardner Sullivan Productions. Sullivan also wrote the screenplay. The film was described as "a virile, fast-moving, jazzy story of the present day and age. It shows the peril to the youth of the land along the cocktail, petting-party route." Plot As described in a review in a film magazine, Donald Dillingham (Landis) marries a chorus girl, Ardell Kendall (Rich), and his wealthy family turn him down, but when they learn that the celebrated sculptor, Gustaf Borgstrom (Hersholt), who is being lionized by society, has selected Ardell as the most beautiful American woman, they call on Donald and insist that he and Ardell and Borgstrom visit their big estate. John Ince (actor)
John Edward Ince (August 29, 1878 – April 10, 1947), also credited as John E. Ince, was an American stage and motion pictures actor, a film director, and the eldest brother of Thomas H. Ince and Ralph Ince. John Ince became a member of The Lambs Club in 1919 like his brother Ralph, who had joined in 1916. A leading man from the early 1910s, he also directed and scripted several of his own vehicles. Concentrating almost exclusively on directing from 1915 through 1928, Ince returned before the cameras as a character actor in the early years of the talkies. Kathleen Myers (April 16, 1899 – September 27, 1959) was an American film actress of the silent era. Biography Myers was the daughter of S. C. Myers, manager of Chrome Steel Works in Newark, New Jersey. Appearing in 22 feature films between 1921 and 1928, "graduating from straight comedies to comedy drama and feature plays." She also had lead roles in some films made in South America. A lost film is a feature or short film that no longer exists in any studio archive, private collection, public archive or the U.S. Library of Congress. Conditions During most of the 20th century, U.S. copyright law required at least one copy of every American film to be deposited at the Library of Congress at the time of copyright registration, but the Librarian of Congress was not required to retain those copies: "Under the provisions of the act of March 4, 1909, authority is granted for the return to the claimant of copyright of such copyright deposits as are not required by the Library." Lincoln Stedman (May 18, 1907 – March 22, 1948) was an American silent film actor. Biography Stedman was born in Denver, Colorado, the only child to Marshall Stedman and silent film beauty Myrtle Stedman. Stedman had a career in films dating back to his boyhood in silent films with his parents. He appeared in more than 80 films between 1917 and 1934. Overweight as a teenager, Stedman resembled Roscoe Arbuckle which allowed him to convincingly play adult roles far beyond his years in real life. He was married to Carol Rohe Stedman. Wendell Phillips Smalley (August 7, 1865 – May 2, 1939) was an American silent film director and actor. Biography Born in Brooklyn, New York, he was the grandson of Wendell Phillips; he was the son of George Washburn Smalley, a war correspondent, and his wife Phoebe Garnaut, adopted by Phillips. He matriculated at Balliol College, Oxford in 1886. Smalley began his career in vaudeville and acted in more than 200 films between 1910 and his death in 1939. Lillian Rose Rich Woodland, more commonly known as Lillian Rich (1 January 1900 – 5 January 1954) was an English-born actress of the silent era. She appeared in more than 60 films between 1919 and 1940. Biography Rich was born in Herne Hill, London, on 1 January 1900. In 1919, she married a young Canadian fighter pilot named Lionel Edward "Leo" Nicholson, and accompanied him back to his hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Rich's new father-in-law decided that she had a future in Hollywood, and he gave her $1000 of his own savings to fund her acting career. After making her film debut in ''The Day She Paid'' (1919), Rich quickly became highly sought, appearing in 18 films between 1920 and 1922. In 1923, Rich lost her financial support when her father-in-law became ill and died, and she did not produce any films until the following year.
