Harry Chauvel
General Sir Henry George Chauvel, (16 April 1865 – 4 March 1945) was a senior officer of the Australian Imperial Force who fought at Gallipoli and during the Sinai and Palestine Campaign in the Middle Eastern theatre of the First World War. He was the first Australian to attain the rank of lieutenant general and later general, and the first to lead a corps. As commander of the Desert Mounted Corps, he was responsible for one of the most decisive victories and fastest pursuits in military history. The son of a grazier, Chauvel was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Upper Clarence Light Horse, a unit organised by his father, in 1886. After the family moved to Queensland he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Queensland Mounted Infantry in 1890, and saw service during the 1891 Australian shearers' strike. Charles Edward Chauvel OBE (7 October 1897 – 11 November 1959) was an Australian filmmaker, producer and screenwriter and nephew of Australian army General Sir Harry Chauvel. He is noted for writing and directing the films '' Forty Thousand Horsemen'' in 1940 and ''Jedda'' in 1955. His wife, Elsa Chauvel, was a frequent collaborator on his filmmaking projects. Early life Family Charles Edward Chauvel was born on 7 October 1897 in Warwick, Queensland, the son of James Allan Chauvel and his wife Susan Isabella (née Barnes), pioneer farmers in the Mutdapilly area. He was the nephew of General Sir Harry Chauvel, Commander of the Australian Light Horse and later the Desert Mounted Corps in Palestine during World War I. His father, a grazier, at 53 also enlisted to serve in Palestine and Sinai in World War I. Charles Pierre Chauvel (born 16 April 1969) is a New Zealand lawyer and former politics of New Zealand, New Zealand politician who was a Labour list Member of parliament, Member of Parliament (2006–2013) until his resignation to take up a position with the United Nations Development Programme, UN Development Programme. Patrick Chauvel (born 1949 in France) is an independent war photographer whose career began when he was just 17 years old. He has covered more than twenty conflicts all over the world, including the Six-Day War and the Vietnam War. In 1995 he was awarded the World Press Photo commendation for ''Spot News Stories'' for his coverage of the Battle of Grozny during the First Chechen War. He is also author of some documentary movies. The Gold Coast Film Festival (GCFF), formerly Gold Coast Film Fantastic, is an annual Australian film festival, held at the Home of the Arts (HOTA) in Surfers Paradise, Gold Coast, Queensland. Founded in 2002 as a fantasy film festival, GCFF now delivers a program of feature films, short films (SIPFEST), web series, film awards, and special events. History Modelled on the Brussels International Festival of Fantasy Film, the festival began with a focus on fantasy and Science fiction films. The Australian landing ship medium ''Harry Chauvel'' (AV 1353) was a United States Navy landing ship medium which was later sold to Australia and operated by the Australian Army. The ship was built by the Pullman-Standard Car Manufacturing Company in Chicago, Illinois and was commissioned into the United States Navy (USN) as USS ''LSM-319'' on 10 August 1944. She was assigned to the Pacific Theater of Operations and saw action during the liberation of the Philippines during 1944 and 1945. Following the war she was decommissioned on 14 June 1946 and laid up in the Pacific Reserve Fleet. The ship was purchased by the Australian Army on 16 July 1959 and was named ''Harry Chauvel'' (AV 1353) in honour of the Australian World War I general Harry Chauvel. Louis Chauvel (born 2 November 1967) is a French sociologist, full professor at University of Luxembourg, PhD Université de Lille (1997), Habilitation Sciences Po (2003). He is specialized in social generations, in the analysis of social structures, in cohort and generational change. Chauvel received some international media attention as an expert following the spring 2006 First Employment Contract protests in France, which underlined the ''déclassement'' (downward social mobility) of the young generations in France.
