Chauncey J. Fox
Chauncey Johnston Fox (August 21, 1797 in Tolland County, Connecticut – February 11, 1883) was an American politician from New York. Life He was the son of Thomas Fox (1770–1811) and Chloe (Bradley) Fox (1777–1852). In August 1818, Chauncey and his brother Pliny went to Olean, New York. They did not find any way to make a living and decided to go in a little boat to Cincinnati, but after two days on the Allegheny River met a settler in the woods, and stayed in his employ. A few months later, Fox went to Great Valley, New York, and became a lumberman. Finding the work too hard, he abandoned lumbering, studied law with John A. Bryan instead, was admitted to the bar in 1826, and practiced in Ellicottville. On February 18, 1827, he married Hannah Hurlburt (1808–1896), and they had five children. 61st New York State Legislature
The 61st New York State Legislature, consisting of the New York State Senate and the New York State Assembly, met from January 2 to April 18, 1838, during the sixth year of William L. Marcy's governorship, in Albany. Background Under the provisions of the New York Constitution of 1821, 32 Senators were elected on general tickets in eight senatorial districts for four-year terms. They were divided into four classes, and every year eight Senate seats came up for election. Assemblymen were elected countywide on general tickets to a one-year term, the whole Assembly being renewed annually. At this time there were two political parties: the Democratic Party and the Whig Party. In May 1837, the Panic of 1837 broke out, and led to a severe financial crisis. The incumbent Democratic State government was blamed for it by the voters, and the opposing Whig Party won the election in November in a landslide. Abram Dixon
Abram Dixon (July 23, 1787, in Manchester, Bennington County, Vermont Republic – April 19, 1875, in Westfield, Chautauqua County, New York) was an American lawyer and politician from New York. Life He was the son of Joseph Dixon (1754–1839) and Mercy (Raymond) Dixon (1761–1847). Around 1795, the family moved to Sherburne, Chenango County, New York. He attended Hamilton-Oneida Academy, and graduated from Yale College in 1813. He then studied law at Hamilton, Madison County, New York. On August 29, 1817, he married Caroline Pelton (1798–1837), and they had three children. The newly-wed couple settled at Westfield, and Dixon practiced law there. Around 1840, he married Eliza Williams (Holt) Higgins (c. 1805–1858), and they had two children. John Birdsall (politician, Born 1802)
John Birdsall (1802 – July 22, 1839) was an American lawyer and politician from New York and Texas. Born in the town of Greene in New York's Chenango County, he was the son of Maurice Birdsall (1774–1852) and Ann (Pixley) Birdsall (1778–1829). He married Ann Whiteside (1805–1833), and then Sarah Peacock (1816–1895). He was admitted to the bar, and practiced in Mayville, New York. He was Judge of the Eighth Circuit Court from 1826 to 1829. He was a member of the New York State Assembly ( Chautauqua Co.) in 1831. He was a member of the New York State Senate (6th D.) from 1832 to 1834, sitting in the 55th, 56th and 57th New York State Legislatures. He resigned his seat on June 5, 1834. In 1837, he removed to Houston, then the capital of the independent Republic of Texas, and resumed the practice of law there.
