Chas Roberts
Roberts Cycles is a custom bicycle frame building business, originally located in Selhurst near Croydon, South London, now located in East Sussex, England. Beginning soon after World War II, Charles (Charlie) Benjamin Roberts was a frame-builder for Holdsworth, Claud Butler and Freddie Grubb. In the 1960s, he founded Roberts Cycles at the family home in Sydenham - he was joined in the workshop by his oldest son Charles, and then by his youngest son Geoff. In 1979, Charlie Roberts died unexpectedly and Charles, began managing the business (which by then had moved from Sydenham to Anerley, South London) with his brother, Geoff and Derek Bailey continuing to build frames. Selhurst
Selhurst is an area in the London Borough of Croydon south-south-east of Charing Cross. Historically it lay in Surrey. The area is bounded to the west and south by Thornton Heath and Croydon and to the east and south by South Norwood and Woodside. Selhurst Park, the home stadium of Crystal Palace Football Club, is sited at the northern end of the neighbourhood. History Selhurst is named after the Old English for "dwelling in a wood", or possibly 'dwelling where willows grow'; the name is first recorded in 1225. Saxon coins were found here when the railway station was built. Housing began to be built in the area following the opening of the Croydon Canal in 1809, however the canal proved to be a failure and it closed in 1836. Tony Doyle (cyclist)
Anthony Paul Doyle (born 19 May 1958) is a British former professional cyclist. Biography Doyle was world pursuit champion in 1980 and 1986. He was a professional between 1980 and 1995, riding for British teams. Doyle represented England and won two bronze medals in the 4,000 metres individual and team pursuit events, at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He finished seventh in the team pursuit at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow as part of the British team. He was not selected for the individual pursuit even though he was the national champion. The place went to Sean Yates. As a result, Doyle turned professional and won the world professional pursuit championship, beating Bert Oosterbosch and Herman Ponsteen. Chris Boardman
Christopher Miles Boardman, (born 26 August 1968) is a British former racing cyclist. A time trial and prologue specialist, Boardman won the inaugural men's World time trial championship in 1994, won the individual pursuit gold medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics, broke the world hour record three times, and won three prologue stages (and consequently wore the yellow jersey on three occasions) at the Tour de France. Boardman's nickname is "The Professor", for his meticulous attention to detail in preparation and training, and his technical know-how. He had an altitude tent built in his house to help him prepare for the hour record attempt, although in an interview he claimed that all it did was help him focus. Lotus was a brand of bicycles designed, specified, marketed and distributed by Lotus International Corp. of Syosset, New York, which had been founded by Sid and Ernst Star. Mike Burrows
Mike Burrows (17 April 1943 – 15 August 2022) was a British bicycle designer from Norwich, England. Burrow is best known for his collaborative work with the design of the track carbon-fibre Lotus 108 time trial bicycle manufactured by Lotus for Chris Boardman, when he won the 1992 Olympic 4000m pursuit in Barcelona. He also attempted to copy the famous "Old Faithful" bike used by Graeme Obree, to be used as a spare in an attempt on the world hour record. However Obree did not like the bike and did not use in any record attempt. Burrows had long been involved in the recumbent bicycle/tricycle world, having designed the Speedy or Windcheetah trike and more recently the Ratcatcher, Ratracer and Ratracer B. Tim Gould (born 30 May 1964) is an English former professional racing cyclist specialising in cyclo-cross and mountain bike racing. Biography After a string of World Cup victories and podium placings through the early 1990s his strength was climbing and in this era he was the best in the world, becoming the Official World Mountain Bike Hill Climb Champion in 1990 at Durango. Gould was the first human to beat a horse on a mountain bike over cross country terrain in the William Hill ''Man v Horse v Bike'' event. Gould raced for Britain internationally and as a world class pro for the Schwinn Mountain Bike Team, with numerous wins and podium finishes in the Grundig World Cup series. Dave Baker (cyclist)
David Baker (born 30 December 1965) is an English former professional cyclist, who competed in cyclo-cross and mountain bike racing. Biography Baker, from Dronfield, Derbyshire, began riding cyclo-cross with Norton Wheelers. He moved to Ace Racing Team where he and teammate Tim Gould dominated cyclo-cross for years. In the late 1980s, Baker and Gould tried small mountain bike races, progressing to Mountain Bike Club events which were then a national series. The British Mountain Bike Federation began in the early 1990s; Baker won the national series on numerous occasions, along with national championships. In 1993, he won the UK round of the Grundig Mountain Bike World Cup at Newnham Park, near Plymouth. He came 15th for Britain at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Kona Bikes is a bicycle company based in the Pacific Northwest. The company was founded in 1988 by Dan Gerhard and Jacob Heilbron in Vancouver, BC. A mountain bike (MTB) or mountain bicycle is a bicycle designed for off-road cycling. Mountain bikes share some similarities with other bicycles, but incorporate features designed to enhance durability and performance in rough terrain, which makes them heavier, more complex and less efficient on smooth surfaces.
