Charters And Caldicott (TV Series)
''Charters and Caldicott'' is a 1985 BBC mystery series featuring the characters Charters and Caldicott from the Hitchcock film ''The Lady Vanishes'' updated to a 1980s setting. It comprised six 50 minute episodes broadcast on BBC1 at 9.25pm on Thursdays from 10 January to 14 February 1985. Plot The story shows the pair in their retirement. Caldicott lives in the splendid Viceroy Court in Marylebone, whilst Charters is a widower living in a country cottage near Reigate, travelling up to his Pall Mall club on a Green Line bus (hailing it on the street as if it were a taxi). When a young girl is found murdered in Caldicott's flat, Charters and Caldicott forsake their regular Friday lunch and cinema visit to involve themselves in solving the crime. Keith Waterhouse
Keith Spencer Waterhouse (6 February 1929 – 4 September 2009) was a British novelist and newspaper columnist and the writer of many television series. Biography Keith Waterhouse was born in Hunslet, Leeds, West Riding of Yorkshire, England. He performed two years of national service in the Royal Air Force. His credits, many with lifelong friend and collaborator Willis Hall, include satires such as ''That Was The Week That Was'', '' BBC-3'' and ''The Frost Report'' during the 1960s; the book for the 1975 musical ''The Card''; '' Budgie''; ''Worzel Gummidge''; and ''Andy Capp'' (an adaptation of the comic strip). ''The Lady Vanishes'' is a 1938 British mystery thriller film directed by Alfred Hitchcock, starring Margaret Lockwood and Michael Redgrave. Written by Sidney Gilliat and Frank Launder, based on the 1936 novel ''The Wheel Spins'' by Ethel Lina White, the film is about a beautiful English tourist travelling by train in continental Europe who discovers that her elderly travelling companion seems to have disappeared from the train. Pall Mall is a street in the St James's area of the City of Westminster, Central London. It connects St James's Street to Trafalgar Square and is a section of the regional A4 road. The street's name is derived from pall-mall, a ball game played there during the 17th century, which in turn is derived from the Italian ''pallamaglio'', literally ball-mallet. Reigate
Reigate ( ) is a town status in the United Kingdom, town in Surrey, England, around south of central London. The settlement is recorded in Domesday Book in 1086 as ''Cherchefelle'' and first appears with its modern name in the 1190s. Charters And Caldicott
Charters and Caldicott started out as two supporting characters in the 1938 Alfred Hitchcock film ''The Lady Vanishes''. The pair of cricket-obsessed characters were played by Naunton Wayne and Basil Radford. The characters were created by Frank Launder and Sidney Gilliat. The duo became very popular and were used as recurring characters in subsequent films and in BBC Radio productions. Julian Charles Becket Amyes (9 August 1917 – 26 April 1992), known as Julian Amyes, was a British film and television director and producer. Although primarily director and producer, Amyes also had acting roles in ''High Treason'' (1951) and ''Mandy'' (1952). Amyes made his directorial début with a BBC ''Sunday Night Theatre'' version of Shakespeare's ''The Merry Wives of Windsor'' in 1952 and also directed a number of other productions for BBC before joining Granada Television in the early 1960s, where he was head of drama from 1963 until 1977.
