Charset Detection
Character encoding detection, charset detection, or code page detection is the process of heuristically guessing the character encoding of a series of bytes that represent text. The technique is recognised to be unreliable and is only used when specific metadata, such as a HTTP header is either not available, or is assumed to be untrustworthy. This algorithm usually involves statistical analysis of byte patterns; such statistical analysis can also be used to perform language detection. This process is not foolproof because it depends on statistical data. In general, incorrect charset detection leads to mojibake. One of the few cases where charset detection works reliably is detecting UTF-8. This is due to the large percentage of invalid byte sequences in UTF-8,In a ''random'' byte string, a byte with the high bit set has only a 1/15 chance of starting a valid UTF-8 code point. Heuristic
A heuristic or heuristic technique (''problem solving'', '' mental shortcut'', ''rule of thumb'') is any approach to problem solving that employs a pragmatic method that is not fully optimized, perfected, or rationalized, but is nevertheless "good enough" as an approximation or attribute substitution. Where finding an optimal solution is impossible or impractical, heuristic methods can be used to speed up the process of finding a satisfactory solution. Heuristics can be mental shortcuts that ease the cognitive load of making a decision. Context Gigerenzer & Gaissmaier (2011) state that sub-sets of ''strategy'' include heuristics, regression analysis, and Bayesian inference. Bush Hid The Facts
"Bush hid the facts" is a common name for a bug present in Microsoft Windows which causes text encoded in ASCII to be interpreted as if it were UTF-16LE, resulting in garbled text. When the string "Bush hid the facts", without quotes, was put in a Notepad document and saved, closed, and reopened, the nonsensical sequence of the Chinese characters "" would appear instead. Content Sniffing
Content sniffing, also known as media type sniffing or MIME sniffing, is the practice of inspecting the content of a byte stream to attempt to deduce the file format of the data within it. Content sniffing is generally used to compensate for a lack of accurate metadata that would otherwise be required to enable the file to be interpreted correctly. Content sniffing techniques tend to use a mixture of techniques that rely on the redundancy found in most file formats: looking for file signatures and magic numbers, and heuristics including searching for well-known representative substrings, the use of byte frequency and ''n''-gram tables, and Bayesian inference. In natural language processing, language identification or language guessing is the problem of determining which natural language given content is in. Computational approaches to this problem view it as a special case of text categorization, solved with various statistical methods. Byte Order Mark
The byte-order mark (BOM) is a particular usage of the special Unicode character code, , whose appearance as a magic number at the start of a text stream can signal several things to a program reading the text: * the byte order, or endianness, of the text stream in the cases of 16- bit and 32-bit encodings; * the fact that the text stream's encoding is Unicode, to a high level of confidence; * which Unicode character encoding is used.
