William Charnley (born 1895) was an English footballer who played in the Football League for Stoke. Career Charnley was born in Kirkham, Lancashire but began his football career with Scottish side Aberdeen. His only appearance for the Dons came in a 2–1 friendly win against Albion Rovers. He joined Stoke in 1919 and played twice in the Football League. Bryan Charnley
Bryan Charnley (20 September 1949 – 19 July 1991) was a British artist who had paranoid schizophrenia, and explored its effects in his work. He committed suicide in July 1991. Early life and flower paintings Bryan John Charnley was born on 20 September 1949 in Stockton-on-Tees. With his twin brother he grew up in London, Chislehurst, in Kent, Cranfield, where his father worked as a Senior Lecturer, and finally in Bromham near Bedford. In the summer of 1968, aged 18, he had a nervous breakdown but was able to study at Leicester School of Art later that year. In 1969, Charnley gained a place at the Central School of Art and Design in Holborn, London, but was unable to complete the course due to another breakdown that was later diagnosed as acute schizophrenia. From 1971 until 1977 he lived at home with his parents between periods of hospitalisation and treatment including electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). In 1978 he moved to Bedford and began painting. James Callaghan "Chic" Charnley (born 11 June 1963 in Glasgow) is a Scottish former football player and coach. Charnley's playing career lasted nearly 20 years, with spells at Hamilton Academical, St Mirren, Hibernian and Dundee, however he is perhaps best known for his numerous spells at Partick Thistle. He also was a coach at Thistle for a short time and was briefly assistant manager of Clyde. David Fraser Charnley (10 October 1935 – 3 March 2012) was an English lightweight boxer considered to be one of the greatest British fighters in his weight class. Known as "The Dartford Destroyer", the left-handed Charnley had a 10-year career lasting from 1954 to 1964. Donn Charnley (April 3, 1928 – February 5, 2023) was an American politician in the state of Washington. Charnley served in the Washington House of Representatives and Washington State Senate as a Democrat from the 1st and 44th Districts from 1971 until 1985. In his second stint in the House 1983–1985, Charnley served as the Majority Whip. Early life and career Charnely was born in Detroit to journalism professor Mitchell Charnley and writer Margery “Peg” Lindsay. He graduated from Broadway High School in Seattle in 1945. Sir John Charnley, (29 August 1911 – 5 August 1982) was an English orthopaedic surgeon. He pioneered the hip replacement operation, which is now one of the most common operations both in the UK and elsewhere in the world, and created the "Wrightington centre for hip surgery". He also demonstrated the fundamental importance of bony compression in operations to arthrodese (fuse) joints, in particular the knee, ankle and shoulder. Charnley also influenced generations of orthopaedic surgeons through his textbook on conservative fracture treatment which was first published in 1950. Raymond Ogden Charnley (29 May 1935 – 15 November 2009) was an English professional footballer. He was a centre forward and was one of the most prolific scorers for Blackpool, with whom he spent ten years, including all but one season in the top flight of English football. With 193 goals in 363 league games, Charnley is the third-highest scorer in Blackpool's history, behind Jimmy Hampson and Stan Mortensen. Samuel Charnley (18 November 1902 – 1977) was a Scottish footballer who played for Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Football League. Career Born in Craigneuk, a suburb of Wishaw, North Lanarkshire, Charnley played for Burnbank Athletic before joining Wolverhampton Wanderers of the Football League Second Division in January 1925. He made his debut on 12 September 1925 in a 4–1 win against Portsmouth. After making 55 appearances in total, scoring once, he joined Midland League team York City in August 1928. He captained York in the 1928–29 season, which was to be their last in the Midland League before being elected to the Football League.
