Charles Short (after 1866 – after 1891) was an English professional footballer who played in the Football Alliance for Small Heath. He played as a forward. Short played football for Birmingham Excelsior before he signed for Small Heath in 1889, and played one game in the Football Alliance in March 1890.Matthews, p. 140. He then played a few games for Unity Gas before returning to Small Heath later the same year. Short, a natural goal poacher, played and scored regularly in the 1890–91 Football Alliance season. George Short
George Frederick Short (1866 – after 1895) was an English professional footballer who made 18 appearances in the Football League playing for Small Heath. Short was born in Birmingham. He played football for the Unity Gas Depot works team before joining Small Heath in 1887. In Small Heath's first season in the Football Alliance, Short scored four goals in 13 appearances playing as a winger, but later he became most comfortable at full back. This meant a lengthy spell in the reserve team, because first-choice defenders Tom Bayley and Fred Speller missed only two games between them in the next two seasons. Short returned to the first team for the club's first season in the Football League in 1892–93, contributing to their winning the inaugural Second Division championship. The 1890–91 season was the 20th season of competitive football in England. Events Everton started the 1890–91 season in superb form with five straight victories, with Fred Geary scoring in each of the first six matches. By mid-January, Everton had completed all but one of their fixtures and were on 29 points, while Preston North End were eleven points adrift with seven games still to play. Everton then had to sit out the next two months as Preston completed their fixture list until they were only two points adrift with one match each left to play. Both teams played their final games of the season on 14 March, with Everton losing 3–2 at Burnley (Geary scored both Everton goals) and Preston going down 3–0 at Sunderland.
