Charlie Forbes
Charlie "Tracker" Forbes (8 May 1865 – 20 June 1922) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Essendon Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Family The son of James Forbes (1815-1900), and Jessie Forbes (1830-1914), née Walker, Charles Forbes was born at West Melbourne, Victoria on 8 May 1865. Football Forbes was a high marking ruckman — "being strong and wiry with a long reach he was able to take the ball well above the head of the average size footballer" — who, with his Essendon team-mates, ruckman Fred Ball and rover Colin Campbell, formed the dominant ruck combination of the era. George Hastings (footballer)
George Albert Hastings (13 January 1877 – 29 January 1956) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Essendon Football Club in the early years of the Victorian Football League (VFL). Hastings usually played on the wing but was also a centreman at times. A member of Essendon's inaugural premiership team in 1897 and again in 1901, Hastings also played in losing Grand Final sides in 1898 and 1902. He represented the Victorian interstate team against South Australia in 1903. Fitzroy Football Club
The Fitzroy Football Club is an Australian rules football club currently competing in the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA). Formed in 1883 to represent the inner-Melbourne municipality of Fitzroy, the club was a member of the Victorian Football Association (VFA), before becoming a foundation member of the breakaway Victorian Football League (VFL/AFL) in 1897. Fitzroy won a total of eight VFL premierships, of which seven (1898, 1899, 1904, 1905, 1913, 1916 and 1922) were won whilst they were nicknamed the Maroons and one (1944) as the Gorillas. The decision of the club to change its nickname to the Lions in 1957 coincided with what history now records as the beginning of decades of poor on-field performance and financial losses that eventually resulted in the club being placed into administration, ultimately leaving the AFL at the end of the 1996 season. 1898 VFL Grand Final
The 1898 VFL Grand Final was an Australian rules football game contested between the Essendon Football Club and Fitzroy Football Club, held in Melbourne on 24 September 1898. The match was played to determine the premiers for the 1898 VFL season. Fitzroy won the match by 15 points. The game was played under atrocious ground conditions, in front of 16,538 people, at the Junction Oval. The match is recognised as the first VFL grand final, although the term "grand final" was not in wide use until 1931. It was the first time that Victorian Football League premiership was decided in a final match, after the 1897 premiership was won under a different finals system by Essendon when they finished above three other clubs on the finals series ladder. Harry Wright (Australian Footballer)
Herbert Lovegrove Wright (13 April 1870 – 19 March 1950) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Essendon Football Club around and during the years following the formation of the Victorian Football League (VFL). Football Wright made his debut in 1894, and was part of the Essendon team that won the premiership that year. He won his second premiership in the 1897 season. During that season, he kicked the winning goal for Essendon in the first round final against Geelong. He also played in the first ever VFL Grand Final the following year. A centreman, Wright finished on the losing team on that occasion but took part in a winning Grand Final in 1901, winning his third premiership. Norman Waugh
Norman James "Norm" Waugh (10 May 1874 – 6 August 1934) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Essendon Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). In the first year of competition, he became one of the club's and leagues first premiership players, during the 1897 VFL season, under the captaincy of George Stuckey. Waugh made his debut against in Round 1 of the season, at Corio Oval. Waugh was also Essendon's first ever leading goalkicker in a VFL season. His 23 goals was the third highest in the League, behind Jack Leith of North Melbourne (26), and Eddy James of Geelong (27). He was the youngest son of Dr James S. George Vautin
George James Phillips Vautin (23 April 1869 – 9 January 1949) was an Australian sportsman who played Australian rules football for the Essendon Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and first-class cricket for both Tasmania and Victoria. Family Vautin was born in Orielton, Tasmania and died in the Mercy Hospital in East Melbourne. Football Vautin was from Tasmania and played at the City Football Club in Hobart. A rover, he represented his league in 1889 in an away series in Victoria, impressing the Essendon recruiters who signed him up for the 1892 VFA season and he was a key part of their premiership teams over the next three seasons. The VFL began in 1897 and Vautin was a member of Essendon's inaugural VFL premiership side. George Stuckey
George Stuckey (6 July 1871 – 15 March 1932) was an Australian rules footballer who played with and captained the Essendon Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Football Stuckey played as both a wingman and half back during his career in the VFA and VFL and was the first captain of Essendon in the VFL; and, when Essendon won the (inaugural) VFL premiership in 1897, he also became the first VFL premiership captain.
