Charlevoix County, Michigan
Charlevoix County ( ) is a county in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2020 Census, the population was 26,054. The county seat is Charlevoix. History 1840s: surveyed and organized as Keskkauko County Between 1840 and 1841, surveyors William Austin Burt, John Mullett and Charles W. Cathcart, surveyed much of Northern Michigan. Cathcart oversaw the internal lines survey for 34N 08W, the region which would later be known as Charlevoix. Mullett and Cathcart laid out many of the townships in the new county including Charlevoix Township. Pierre François Xavier De Charlevoix
Pierre François Xavier de Charlevoix, S.J. ( la, Petrus Franciscus-Xaverius de Charlevoix; 24 or 29 October 1682 – 1 February 1761) was a French Jesuit priest, traveller, and historian, often considered the first historian of New France. He had little interest for "a life of suffering and deprivation for the conversion of Indian souls", but "an eager curiosity concerning life". Name Charlevoix's name also appears as Pierre-François-Xavier de Charlevoix, Pierre De Charlevoix, and François-Xavier de Charlevoix. The Michigan House of Representatives is the lower house of the Michigan Legislature. Big Rock Point Nuclear Power Plant
Big Rock Point was a nuclear power plant near Charlevoix, Michigan, United States. Big Rock operated from 1962 to 1997. It was owned and operated by Consumers Power, now known as Consumers Energy. Its boiling water reactor was made by General Electric (GE) and was capable of producing 67 megawatts of electricity. Bechtel Corporation was the primary contractor. History Big Rock was Michigan's first nuclear power plant and the nation's fifth. It also produced cobalt-60 for the medical industry from 1971 to 1982. Ground was broken on July 20, 1960. Construction was completed in 29 months at a cost of $27.7 million. Its license from the United States Atomic Energy Commission, Nuclear Regulatory Commission was issued on August 29, 1962. The Odawa (also Ottawa or Odaawaa ), said to mean "traders", are an Indigenous American ethnic group who primarily inhabit land in the Eastern Woodlands region, commonly known as the northeastern United States and southeastern Canada. Ironton Ferry
Ironton Ferry is a four-car cable ferry that crosses a narrow point on the South Arm of Lake Charlevoix in the U.S. state of Michigan in the unincorporated community of Ironton. The ferry connects Ironton, located about from Charlevoix, to Boyne City. The ferry runs between April and November. The automobile fare has risen to $3.00 each way. History The Ironton ferry began operation in 1876. At first, the operator took individual passengers across Lake Charlevoix in a rowboat. Springvale Township is a civil township of Emmet County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 2,146 at the 2020 census. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of , of which is land and (4.99%) is water. Portions of Crooked Lake and Pickerel Lake, two lakes in the Inland Waterway connecting to Lake Huron, lie within Springvale Township. These lakes, as well as Berry Creek, which flows into Pickerel Lake, form the northern boundary of the township. The southwesternmost township of Emmet County, Resort Township is immediately adjacent Petoskey, the county seat and largest city in Emmet County. Melrose Township is a civil township of Charlevoix County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 1,403 at the 2010 census. Boyne Falls
Boyne Falls is a village in Charlevoix County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 358 at the 2020 census. The village is located within Boyne Valley Township. History Boyne Falls was first settled with the coming of the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad in 1874. In that year, A. D. Carpenter built the first store. A post office opened in Boyne Falls on September 5, 1874 with William Nelson serving as the first postmaster. The community was named by John Miller after the Boyne River, which has a nearby set of waterfalls. The name itself came from another river in Ireland. The community incorporated as a village in 1893. The railway line is now operated by the Great Lakes Central Railroad, although the station in Boyne Falls has been closed since 1973. Mackinaw City ( ) is a village in Emmet and Cheboygan counties in the U.S. state of Michigan.
