Charles William Adams (surveyor)
Charles William Adams (7 July 1840–29 October 1918) was a New Zealand surveyor, astronomer and public servant. He was born in Buckland, Tasmania, Australia on July 7th 1840. His son, Charles Edward Adams, pursued a similar career as a university lecturer, surveyor, astronomer and seismologist. His daughter, Ella Spicer, and granddaughter, Peggy Spicer Mary Margaret Gore Spicer (1908–1984) was a New Zealand artist. Buckland, Tasmania
Buckland is a rural locality in the local government area (LGA) of Glamorgan–Spring Bay in the South-east LGA region of Tasmania. The locality is about south-west of the town of Triabunna. The 2016 census has a population of 179 for the state suburb of Buckland. It is a village on the Tasman Highway. It contains a historic church, St John the Baptist church. History The area around Buckland was originally settled around 1820. It was called the Prosser Plains as it was near the Prosser River. The oldest remaining house dates from 1826, and is called Woodsden. The village was renamed Buckland by the then governor, John Franklin in 1846, gaining its name from William Buckland the Dean of Westminster. The Buckland Inn was built in 1841 and licensed in 1845. Charles Edward Adams (1 October 1870 – 31 October 1945) was a New Zealand university lecturer, surveyor, astronomer and seismologist. His father, Charles William Adams, emigrated from Tasmania in 1862 and was also a surveyor and astronomer. Ella Spicer
Eleanor 'Ella' Juliet Spicer (née Adams, 1876 – 1958) was a New Zealand artist. Her work is included in the collection of the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, Turnbull library and Hocken library. Personal life Born in Lawrence, New Zealand in 1876, she was the daughter of Charles William Adams. Although she moved to Wellington in 1907, Spicer was primarily based in Auckland. Career Spicer studied painting in Dunedin, under Fanny Wimperis and Girolamo Nerli. She began exhibiting from age fifteen and was known for her watercolour painting and landscapes. Up until 1907, when she married John Edward Diggle Spicer, she exhibited under the name Ella Adams. Peggy Spicer
Mary Margaret Gore Spicer (1908–1984) was a New Zealand artist. Education Spicer was educated at Chilton Saint James School in Lower Hutt, New Zealand, and Diocesan School for Girls, Auckland, Diocesan School for Girls in Auckland. She then trained at the Elam School of Fine Arts and was influenced by the teaching of John Weeks (painter), John Weeks, though she was not taught by him directly. Career Spicer worked in Watercolor painting, watercolours, often painting landscapes and life in small towns of New Zealand. She was a contemporary of Rena Frances Manson, Rena Manson, Ida Eise, and Bessie Christie. After her studies, Spicer traveled to England and Egypt with her mother, Ella Spicer, also an artist.
