Charles W. Daniels
Charles W. Daniels (January 14, 1943 – September 1, 2019) was a justice of the New Mexico Supreme Court from 2007 to 2018. He was first recommended by the New Mexico Judicial Nominating Commission and appointed by Governor Bill Richardson in October 2007, won election in the 2008 general election, and was retained for an additional eight-year term in his 2010 retention election. In 2010, he was selected by his fellow Justices to serve as chief justice for a two-year term and was elected Chief Justice again in 2016. He retired on December 31, 2018. Daniels was born in southeastern Arkansas, where his parents worked as sharecroppers on a 10-acre farm. When Daniels was 6, his family relocated to Albuquerque. He attended Sandia and Highland high schools before joining the Air Force. New Mexico Supreme Court
The New Mexico Supreme Court is the highest court in the U.S. state of New Mexico. It is established and its powers defined by Article VI of the New Mexico Constitution. It is primarily an appellate court which reviews civil and criminal decisions of New Mexico's trial courts of general jurisdiction and certain specialized legislative courts, only having original jurisdiction in a limited number of actions. It currently resides in the New Mexico Supreme Court Building in Santa Fe. The court's five justices are chosen by statewide election, or appointed by the governor if to fill a seat that has become vacant mid-term; the justices in turn choose who among them will serve as chief justice. Judith Nakamura
Judith Nakamura (born November 3, 1960) is an American judge and former chief justice of the New Mexico Supreme Court. She was appointed to the court by Governor Susana Martinez in 2015, and was re-elected in November 2016. Early life Nakamura was born and raised in New Mexico. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of New Mexico in 1983 and a Juris Doctor from the University of New Mexico School of Law in 1989. Career After graduating from college, she served as a political director for the Republican Party of New Mexico and as a staffer for U.S. Senator Pete Domenici. After law school, Nakamura was an attorney in private practice, and for New Mexico Commissioner of Public Lands. Judicial career Nakamura was elected as a judge on the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court in 1998, and served as Chief Judge of that court from 2002 to 2013.
