Charles Tottenham (1716–1795)
Charles Tottenham (1716 – 10 September 1795) was an Irish Member of Parliament. He sat in the Irish House of Commons for Fethard from 1755 to 1760, for New Ross from 1761 to 1768, for Bannow from 1768 to 1776, for Clonmines from 1776 to 1790 and again for Fethard from 1790 to his death. He was a younger son of Charles Tottenham and his first wife Ellinor Cliffe, daughter of John Cliffe of Mulrankin, County Wexford and Barbara Carr, and younger brother of Sir John Tottenham, 1st Baronet, who married a daughter of Nicholas Loftus, 1st Viscount Loftus and was father of Charles Loftus, 1st Marquess of Ely. Charles also married a daughter of the 1st Viscount Loftus, Anne (born 8 November 1718, died 10 November 1768). Irish House Of Commons
The Irish House of Commons was the lower house of the Parliament of Ireland that existed from 1297 until 1800. The upper house was the House of Lords. The membership of the House of Commons was directly elected, but on a highly restrictive franchise, similar to the unreformed House of Commons in contemporary England and Great Britain. Catholics were disqualified from sitting in the Irish parliament from 1691, even though they comprised the vast majority of the Irish population. The Irish executive, known as the Dublin Castle administration, under the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, was not answerable to the House of Commons but to the British government. However, the Chief Secretary for Ireland was usually a member of the Irish parliament. In the Commons, business was presided over by the Speaker. Sir James Hutchinson, 2nd Baronet
The Hutchinson, later Synge-Hutchinson Baronetcy, of Castlesallagh in the County of Wicklow, was a title in the Baronetage of Ireland. It was created on 11 December 1782 for Francis Hutchinson, Member of the Irish Parliament for Jamestown. He was the son of The Right Reverend Samuel Hutchinson, Bishop of Killala and Achonry. On the death of the second Baronet in 1813, the title was inherited by Samuel Synge (who assumed the additional surname of Hutchinson) according to a special remainder in the letters patent. He was the great-nephew of the first and second Baronets and the brother of Sir Robert Synge, 1st Baronet, of Kiltrough (see Synge baronets for more information on this branch of the family). In 1844 he served as high sheriff of County Cork. The title became extinct on the death of the fourth Baronet in 1906. The 18th century lasted from January 1, 1701 ( MDCCI) to December 31, 1800 ( MDCCC). During the 18th century, elements of Enlightenment thinking culminated in the American, French, and Haitian Revolutions. During the century, slave trading and human trafficking expanded across the shores of the Atlantic, while declining in Russia, China, and Korea. Loftus Hall
Loftus Hall is a large country house on the Hook peninsula, County Wexford, Ireland. Built on the site of the original Redmond Hall, it is said to have been haunted by the devil and the ghost of a woman. Loftus Hall has a long history of ownership, through private residence, landlords, two different orders of nuns, and a hotel in the 1980s run by members of the Devereux family. Purchased by Shane and Aidan Quigley in 2011, Loftus Hall was opened to the public in 2012 with guided tours of the house and a fully restored walled gardens. It was closed in 2020 and sold in 2021. As of 2022, it was under renovation and not open to the public.
