Charles Storrow Williams
Charles Storrow Williams (December 25, 1827 – June 20, 1890) was an American civil engineer who managed the Memphis and Little Rock Railroad and Southern Railway in Mississippi. Early life Williams was born on December 25, 1827, in Woodstock, Vermont to Mary Ann Wentworth (Brown) and Norman Williams. His father served as Vermont's Auditor of Accounts and Secretary of State and his mother was a member of the Appleton and Wentworth families. He was educated in Woodstock's public schools, the Ellsworth Military Academy, and the Kimball Union Academy. He graduated from the University of Vermont in 1847 with a Master of Arts degree. After graduating he studied to become a civil engineer under Hosea Doten. Career Williams got his start in engineering with a branch of the Northern Railroad. Memphis And Little Rock Railroad
The Memphis and Little Rock Railroad was chartered in the U.S. state of Arkansas in 1853. The line ran from Hopefield, Arkansas (now West Memphis) on the east, to Huntersville (now North Little Rock, Arkansas) on the west. The eastern third was completed in 1858 and the western third was built by 1862. During the American Civil War, the Union Army seized control of the line and used the western section to supply its occupation force in Little Rock. The center section was finally completed in 1871. The railroad was subjected to frequent damage from floods and suffered from financial problems. It was sold in 1873, 1877, 1887, 1898, and 1900 before eventually becoming part of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad (Rock Island). Huntsville, Alabama
Huntsville is a city in Madison County, Limestone County, and Morgan County, Alabama, United States. It is the county seat of Madison County. Located in the Appalachian region of northern Alabama, Huntsville is the most populous city in the state. Huntsville was founded within the Mississippi Territory in 1805 and became an incorporated town in 1811. When Alabama was admitted as a state in 1819, Huntsville was designated for a year as the first capital, before that was moved to more central settlements.
