Charles Speight (30 July 1865 – 19 February 1928) was a New Zealand brewer and businessman. Speight was born in Dunedin, New Zealand, in 1865. In the 1926 King's Birthday Honours Speight was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in recognition of his role as vice-chairman of the New Zealand and South Seas International Exhibition. Dunedin ( ; mi, Ōtepoti) is the second-largest city in the South Island of New Zealand (after Christchurch), and the principal city of the Otago region. Order Of The British Empire
The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service. It was established on 4 June 1917 by King George V and comprises five classes across both civil and military divisions, the most senior two of which make the recipient either a knight if male or dame if female. There is also the related British Empire Medal, whose recipients are affiliated with, but not members of, the order. Recommendations for appointments to the Order of the British Empire were originally made on the nomination of the United Kingdom, the self-governing Dominions of the Empire (later Commonwealth) and the Viceroy of India. New Zealand And South Seas International Exhibition
The New Zealand and South Seas International Exhibition was a world's fair held in Dunedin, New Zealand from 17 November 1925 until 1 May 1926, which celebrated that country and the South Seas. It was the third such exhibition held in Dunedin, with earlier exhibitions in 1865 and 1889. The exhibition had over 3 million visitors. Description The exhibition was held on reclaimed land at Logan Park, much of it reclaimed especially for the exhibition. A tidal inlet originally known as Pelichet Bay had been partly reclaimed, leaving a flat area and a lake, Lake Logan. In order to provide enough land for the exhibition, the lake was drained and the site cleared before construction of a series of magnificent exhibition buildings by architect Edmund Anscombe. Speight's is a brewery located in Dunedin, New Zealand. The brewery is owned by the Japanese-controlled holding company Lion. It is best known for its Gold Medal Ale, one of the best-selling beers in New Zealand. The brewery also gave rise to a chain of ''Speight's Ale House'' gastropubs across the country. History The brewery was established on Rattray Street, Central Dunedin in 1876 by James Speight, Charles Greenslade and William Dawson after they had left their positions at ''Wellpark Brewery'' (known today as the Tennent Caledonian). In 1880, Speight's won a gold medal at the Melbourne International Exhibition, giving rise to the ''Speight's Gold Medal Ale'' brand. By 1887 it had become the largest brewery in New Zealand, and had expanded to a sufficient size that it exported beer to Australia and the Pacific Islands.
