Charles Prestwood Lucas
Sir Charles Prestwood Lucas (7 August 1853 – 7 May 1931) was a British civil servant and historian. Lucas was born at Crickhowell, Brecknockshire, Wales, the youngest son in a large family. He was the grandson of Dr. Henry John Lucas (1773–1840) and Jenetta Illtyds (1776–1821) and son of physician Henry Lucas and Elizabeth Bevan. His sister Mary Anne Lucas married the first Sir Joseph Bailey, later Lord Glanusk. Lucas was educated at Winchester College and Balliol College, Oxford, graduating B.A. in 1884. Lucas was called to the bar, Lincoln's Inn, on 30 April 1885. He became a civil servant in the Colonial Office which led to his becoming head of the Dominion Department and, in 1907, to his knighthood. In connection with his role as Assistant Under-Secretary for the Colonies, in 1909 he was appointed Registrar of the Order of St Michael and St George. Crickhowell
Crickhowell (; cy, Crucywel , non-standard spelling ') is a town and community in southeastern Powys, Wales, near Abergavenny, and is in the historic county of Brecknockshire. Location The town lies on the River Usk, on the southern edge of the Black Mountains and in the eastern part of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Significant parts of the surrounding countryside, over , form part of the Glanusk Park estate. Etymology and language The name Crickhowell is an anglicised spelling that corresponds to the Welsh Crucywel. The name is derived from Crug Hywel, meaning 'Hywel's mound'. This is usually identified with the Iron Age hill fort on nearby Table Mountain, although this has the local name of Mynydd y Begwn. Knights Commander Of The Order Of The Bath
The Most Honourable Order of the Bath is a British order of chivalry founded by George I on 18 May 1725. The name derives from the elaborate medieval ceremony for appointing a knight, which involved bathing (as a symbol of purification) as one of its elements. The knights so created were known as "Knights of the Bath". George I "erected the Knights of the Bath into a regular Military Order". He did not (as is commonly believed) revive the Order of the Bath, since it had never previously existed as an Order, in the sense of a body of knights who were governed by a set of statutes and whose numbers were replenished when vacancies occurred. A knight is a person granted an honorary title of knighthood by a head of state (including the Pope) or representative for service to the monarch, the church or the country, especially in a military capacity.
