Charles David Powell, Baron Powell of Bayswater, (born 6 July 1941) is a British diplomat and businessman who served as a key foreign policy adviser to Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher during the 1980s. Early life and education Son of Air Vice Marshal John Frederick Powell and his wife Ysolda, Powell was educated at the Cathedral Choir School, Canterbury; King's School, Canterbury; and New College, Oxford, graduating BA in 1963 with first class honours in Modern History. One brother, Sir Chris Powell, is an advertiser; another, Jonathan, was chief of staff to Prime Minister Tony Blair. Career Diplomatic Charles Powell joined His Majesty's Diplomatic Service in 1963. His first posting was as Third Secretary to Helsinki in 1965, where he was promoted to Second Secretary. In 1968, he returned to London, spending three years at the FCO. Charles Powell (historian)
Charles Tito Powell CMG (born 1960) is a Spanish-British historian who studied History and Modern Languages at the University of Oxford. His D. Phil. thesis was on Spain's transition to democracy. He was a Junior Research Fellow at St Antony's College, Oxford, a lecturer in History at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, and an J. A. Pye Research Fellow at University College, Oxford. On moving to Spain in 1997, he was appointed deputy director of the Ortega y Gasset Foundation's Centro Español de Relaciones Internacionales (CERI). In 2002 he joined the recently created Elcano Royal Institute, Spain's leading international relations think-tank, of which he is currently Director. Since September of that year he is also Professor of Contemporary Spanish History at the CEU San Pablo University (Madrid). Admiral Charles Powell Hamilton (26 December 1747 – 12 March 1825) was an officer of the Royal Navy, who saw service during the American War of Independence, and the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, eventually rising to the rank of admiral. Charles Berkeley Powell
Charles Berkeley Powell (August 19, 1858 – 1933) was an Ontario businessman and political figure. He represented the riding of Ottawa in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1898 to 1904 as a Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario, Conservative member. He was born in Port Dover, the son of Colonel Walker Powell, and educated at Galt College and McGill University. He apprenticed as a machinist with the Grand Trunk Railway and became a mechanical engineer. Powell served on the city council for Ottawa. He became a partner in the lumber firm of Pattee and Perley. Charles Lawrence Powell (April 19, 1902 – August 17, 1975) was a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Washington. Education and career Born in Lawrence, Kansas, Powell received a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Washington School of Law in 1925. He was in private practice in Seattle, Washington from 1925 to 1929, and in Kennewick, Washington from 1929 to 1959. He was prosecuting attorney of Benton County, Washington from 1931 to 1934 and from 1941 to 1946, serving as city attorney of Kennewick from 1934 to 1944. Charles Elvin Powell (April 4, 1932 – September 1, 2014) was an American multi-sport professional sportsman as an NFL football player, professional boxer (who once fought both Muhammad Ali and Floyd Patterson), and Minor League baseball player. Powell was born in Texas. He and his younger brother Art Powell, an NFL wide receiver for the New York Titans and Oakland Raiders in the 1960s, grew up in the Logan Heights area of San Diego, California. Powell played professional baseball and football as well as boxed. His greatest success was as an NFL player and a boxer, even boxing against Muhammad Ali. Charles Lee Powell
Charles Lee Powell (March 19, 1863 – July 22, 1959) was an American structural engineer and entrepreneur. He invented and patented new methods for building concrete structures underground, and is credited with building much of Los Angeles’ early infrastructure, including the Second and Third Street Tunnels, the Angels Flight funicular railway in the Bunker Hill district, and downtown sewerage systems. He was born in Virginia, and died at age 96 in Los Angeles, California. He was also very well known as a philanthropist and set up many fellowships and research grants. Since the opening of the first Powell Laboratory in 1986, the Charles Lee Powell Foundation has donated over $96 million in grant monies, including over three decades of giving to UC San Diego's Jacob School of Engineering.
