Charles Obas
Charles Obas was an early-twentieth-century painter of Haitian art. Biography In 1927, Charles Obas was born in Plaisance, Nord a mountainous region in the northern part of Haiti. He joined the Haitian ''Centre D’Art'' in the late 1940s, but left after two years to help form the ''Foyer des Arts Plastiques'' in 1950. He won first prize in a contest sponsored by the National Office of Tourism in 1958. In addition to his artistic talent, Obas was also an equally accomplished musician. Art Obas’ paintings are known for their beautiful renderings of rain. Some see his works as allegories depicting the harsh realities and struggles of living under the oppressive François Duvalier regime. Cowering or burdened villagers, rainstorms, turbulent harbors, and ominous nocturnes are some of his most enduring motifs. Haitian Art
Haitian art is a complex tradition, reflecting African roots with strong Indigenous, American and European aesthetic and religious influences. It is an important representation of Haitian culture and history. Many artists cluster in "schools" of painting, such as the Cap-Haïtien school, which features depictions of daily life in the city, the Jacmel School, which reflects the steep mountains and bays of that coastal town, or the Saint-Soleil School, which is characterized by abstracted human forms and is heavily influenced by "Vaudou" symbolism. François Duvalier
François Duvalier (; 14 April 190721 April 1971), also known as Papa Doc, was a Haitian politician of French Martiniquan descent who served as the President of Haiti from 1957 to 1971. He was elected president in the 1957 general election on a populist and black nationalist platform. After thwarting a military coup d'état in 1958, his regime rapidly became more autocratic and despotic. An undercover government death squad, the Tonton Macoute ( ht, Tonton Makout), indiscriminately killed Duvalier's opponents; the Tonton Macoute was thought to be so pervasive that Haitians became highly fearful of expressing any form of dissent, even in private. Duvalier further sought to solidify his rule by incorporating elements of Haitian mythology into a personality cult. Prior to his rule, Duvalier was a physician by profession. Beethova Obas
Beethova Obas (born 1964) is a Haitian musician. Background Beethova's father, Charles Obas, was a painter. A music lover, he named Beethova after Beethoven. Beethova was only 4 years old when Charles Obas disappeared after participating in a protest against murders committed by François Duvalier's dictatorial regime. Charles Obas was never seen again, leaving the family in financial trouble, while also having a social and emotional impact. Beethova became a self-taught musician, learning the guitar and accordion. His first musical release was a song composed with Manno Charlemagne, "Nwel Anme" (Bitter Christmas). In 1988, he won a Découverte RFI award for the Best Young Singer, when Manu Dibango, President of the Jury noted his voice and talent. In 1991, Martiniquan pianist Paulo Rosine invited Obas to sing on Malavoi's album ''Matébis'' after discovering his voice during a tour of the band in Haiti.
