Charles N. Holden
Charles Newton Holden (May 13, 1816 – September 29, 1887) was an American politician who served as city treasurer of Chicago, a Chicago alderman, president of the Chicago Board of Education, and Chicago commissioner of taxes. He was the unsuccessful Republican Party (United States), Republican Party nominee for mayor of Chicago in 1862 Chicago mayoral election, 1862. Early life Holden was born May 13, 1816, in Fort Covington, New York. Career Holden was a school teacher at the age of 20. After working as a store clerk for a year, Holden moved to Chicago. He soon moved to Will County, Illinois, where he briefly lived with relatives and found work at a claim. Quickly moving back to Chicago, he found employment at a clerk in John H. Kinzie's lumber yard. Holden was elected as a Chicago alderman from the 5th ward in 1855, serving until 1857, when he was elected Chicago city treasurer, a position he held through the following year. Fort Covington ( moh, Kentsia’kowáhne) is a town in Franklin County, New York. The population was 1,676 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from a War of 1812 fortification. The original name of the town was ''French Mills''. The town is on the county's northern border, which is also the Canada–United States border. History The area of what is now Fort Covington was settled during the 1790s by people from southern Canada and Vermont, who were drawn to the area by a need for people to work at the mills located on the Salmon River. The village was first named French Mills. In July 1813, a blockhouse was built here to shelter wounded soldiers and to provide a winter headquarters. In 1817, French Mills was re-named to Fort Covington, named after Brigadier General Leonard Covington, who had been mortally wounded during the Battle of Chrysler's Farm on November 11, 1813 in the War of 1812.
