Sir Charles Monro, 1st Baronet
General Sir Charles Carmichael Monro, 1st Baronet, (15 June 1860 – 7 December 1929) was a British Army General in the First World War. He held the post of Commander-in-Chief, India in 1916–1920. From 1923 to 1929 he was the Governor of Gibraltar. Early military career He was the youngest son of Henry Monro and Catherine Power. Educated at Sherborne School and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, Monro was commissioned into the 2nd Regiment of Foot as a second lieutenant on 13 August 1879. He was promoted to lieutenant on 15 May 1881 and to captain on 24 July 1889. He attended the Staff College, Camberley from 1889 to 1890 and, promoted to major on 23 February 1898, he served as a brigade major until he was appointed a deputy assistant adjutant general on 15 April 1899. He vacated that appointment in February 1900, as he went to South Africa to serve in the Second Boer War, where he was present at the Battle of Paardeberg in 1900. Charles Monro (rugby Union)
Charles John Monro (5 April 1851 – 9 April 1933), sometimes also referred to as Charles Munro in accordance with his clan name, is credited with introducing rugby union to New Zealand. Early life Monro was born on 5 April 1851 in Waimea West, near Nelson, New Zealand. He was the fourth son of politician Sir David Monro and his wife Dinah. His father would later become the second Speaker of the New Zealand House of Representatives. His sister, Maria Georgiana Monro, would marry the Scottish geologist, naturalist, and surgeon James Hector. Charles Henry Monro
Charles Henry Monro (1835–1908) was an English author, jurist and benefactor. Life He was born in London, 17 March 1835, the second of three sons of Cecil Monro (1803–78) of Hadley, chief registrar of the Court of Chancery, son of John Monro and a descendant of Alexander Monro, principal of Edinburgh University 1685–90. Charles's mother was Cecil's wife Elizabeth (d. 1883), daughter of Colonel Henry Howe Knight-Erskine of Pittodrie. Charles's older brother, Cecil James, was incapacitated by phthisis soon after his election to a fellowship at Trinity in 1855. His younger brother, Kenneth, an artillery officer, died in early manhood of phthisis in Nova Scotia. Monro entered Harrow in 1847, was Monitor in 1853, and proceeded to Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, as Sayer scholar in 1853.
