Charles Lamb (painter)
Charles Vincent Lamb (30 August 1893 – 15 December 1964) was an Irish landscape and portrait painter. Early life Charles Vincent Lamb was born in Portadown, County Armagh on 30 August 1893. He was the son of a painter and decorator, and a Justice of the Peace, John Lamb. He was the eldest of seven children, having three sisters and three brothers. Lamb served an apprenticeship with his father where he won a gold medal as Housepainter of the Year in 1913. He attended Portadown Technical School before studying life drawing at Belfast School of Art in the evenings. In 1917 he won a teaching-scholarship which took him to the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art for four years where he came under the tutelage of Seán Keating. Whilst studying Lamb befriended the Galway writer Pádraic Ó Conaire who encouraged him to visit, and paint the West of Ireland. Belfast School Of Art
The Belfast School of Art, is a School in thUlster University Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciencesand is physically located at the Belfast campus. Following the results of the Research Excellence Framework 2014 Ulster is ranked within the top ten for research in Art and Design in the UK. Leo Whelan
Leo Whelan RHA (10 January 1892 – 6 November 1956) was an Irish painter. His work was part of the painting event in the art competition at the 1932 Summer Olympics. Born in Dublin and educated at Belvedere College and the Metropolitan School of Art, Whelan was a student of William Orpen. He first exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1911, and was awarded the Taylor Art Scholarship five years later in 1916. He exhibited nearly 250 works at the RHA from 1911 until 1956. He painted many portraits of Irish Republican Army volunteers, including General Richard Mulcahy and Michael Collins. George Clausen
Sir George Clausen (18 April 1852 – 22 November 1944) was a British artist working in oil and watercolour, etching, mezzotint, dry point and occasionally lithographs. He was knighted in 1927. Biography George Clausen was born at 8 William Street in the Regents Park district of London on 18 April 1852, the son of a decorative artist of Danish descent and a Scottish mother. From 1867 to 1873, he attended the design classes at the South Kensington Schools in London with great success. He then worked in the studio of Edwin Long RA, and subsequently in Paris under Bouguereau and Tony Robert-Fleury at the Académie Julian. Ronald Ossory Dunlop
Ronald Ossory Dunlop (28 June 1894 – 18 May 1973) was an Irish writer and painter in oil of landscapes, seascapes, figure studies, portraits and still life. Life and career Dunlop was born in Dublin, Ireland, to a Scottish-Irish Anthroposophical- Quaker family. His mother painted in watercolour. He studied at Manchester School of Art, at Wimbledon College of Art and in Paris, having spent some time working in an advertising agency. He became a prolific exhibitor, venues including the Royal Academy, the New English Art Club, Leicester and Redfern Galleries, the Royal Society of Arts, the Royal Hibernian Academy and the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts. Victor Waddington
Victor Waddington (1907 - 1981) was a British art dealer, active in Dublin and then London, an early advocate for the work of Jack Yeats and Henri Hayden. He was the father of fellow art dealers, Leslie and Theo Waddington. Career He started the Victor Waddington Galleries at 8 South Anne Street, Dublin in 1927, having moved there from London. The gallery exhibited modernist and avant-garde work from Irish, British, and European artists. Other artists that were featured included Yvonne Jammet, Seán Keating, and Moyra Barry. Thomas Bodkin
Professor Thomas Patrick Bodkin (21 July 1887 – 24 April 1961) was an Irish lawyer, art historian, art collector and curator. Bodkin was Director of the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin from 1927 to 1935 and founding Director of the Barber Institute of Fine Arts in Birmingham from 1935 until 1952, where he acquired the nucleus of the collection described by ''The Observer'' as "the last great art collection of the twentieth century." The 1948 Summer Olympics (officially the Games of the XIV Olympiad and also known as London 1948) were an international multi-sport event held from 29 July to 14 August 1948 in London, England, United Kingdom. Following a twelve-year hiatus caused by the outbreak of World War II, these were the first Summer Olympics held since the 1936 Games in Berlin. James Humbert Craig
James Humbert Craig (12 July 1877 in Belfast – 12 June 1944) was an Irish painter.Craig was born in Belfast to Alexander Craig, a tea merchant, and a Swiss mother, Marie Metzenen, from a family with a painting tradition. He was raised in County Down and maintained a studio at Cushendun, County Antrim. Craig abandoned a career in business, briefly attended the Belfast School of Art, and became a mostly self-taught painter of landscapes. Among his favorite panoramas were Donegal, Connemara and the Glens of Antrim. Craig was elected to the Royal Ulster Academy and the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1928. Dermod O'Brien
William Dermod O'Brien PRHA DL Hon RA (10 June 1865 – 3 October 1945), commonly known as Dermod O'Brien, was an Irish painter, chiefly of landscapes and portraits. His work was part of the painting event in the art competition at the 1928 Summer Olympics. Early life and family O'Brien was the son of Edward William O'Brien and Hon. Mary Spring Rice, granddaughter of Lord Monteagle of Brandon. He was born at Mount Trenchard House near Foynes in County Limerick. For a time after his mother's death, he was raised by his aunt Charlotte Grace O'Brien, along with his sisters, Nelly and Lucy. His father subsequently remarried in 1880. John Lavery
Sir John Lavery (20 March 1856 – 10 January 1941) was a Northern Irish painter best known for his portraits and wartime depictions. Life and career John Lavery was born in inner North Belfast, baptised at St Patrick's Church, Belfast and, while still a child, moved to Scotland where he attended Haldane Academy in Glasgow in the 1870s. In 1878 he set up his own studio which was razed in a fire in the following year. With a £300 insurance pay-out he spent a year studying at Heatherley's School in London. Lavery continued his studies at the Académie Julian in Paris in the early 1880s. He returned to Glasgow and was associated with the Glasgow School.
