Charles L. Tutt, III
Charles Leaming Tutt III (January 16, 1911 – November 3, 1993) was a well-known figure in the history of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Colorado Springs. Born in Coronado, California, he was the eldest son of Charles L. Tutt, Jr., his granthfather Charles L. Tutt, Sr. was a notable miner. He had two brothers, William Thayer Tutt, William Thayer, born 1912, and Russell Thayer, born July 27, 1913, as well as a sister, Josephine Thayer Tutt, born June 1, 1919. He studied at the Thacher School. In college, he was on the fencing team and a member of Charter. Tutt spent most of his career with General Motors in Flint, Michigan, at first with Buick, and later with the General Motors Institute, of which he became dean of engineering. In the 1940s, he spent several years on the engineering faculty of Princeton University. After retirement, he moved to Colorado Springs. The Broadmoor (stylized as THE BRODMOOR) is a hotel and resort in the Broadmoor neighborhood of Colorado Springs, Colorado. The Broadmoor is a member of Historic Hotels of America of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Its visitors have included heads of state, celebrities, and professional sports stars. Spencer Penrose
Spencer Penrose (November 2, 1865 - December 7, 1939) was an American entrepreneur and philanthropist. He made his fortune from mining, ore processing, and real estate speculation in Colorado and other parts of the West. He founded the Utah Copper Company in 1903, and also established mining operations in Arizona, New Mexico and Nevada. He settled with his fortune in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he and partner Charles L. Tutt had a road constructed to the top of Pikes Peak. They initiated an annual motor car race to the top. In 1918 Penrose opened an opulent resort hotel known as The Broadmoor, built outside the city which was a "dry" community. In 1937 he and his wife Julie established the El Pomar Foundation, to support activities to improve Colorado.
