Charles Erskine, Earl Of Mar
Charles Erskine, Earl of Mar (19 October 165023 May 1689) was a Scottish nobleman. He is regarded as both the 22nd earl (in the 1st creation) and the 5th earl (in the 7th). He raised the 21st Regiment of Foot, or Royal Scots Fusiliers, in 1679, and became its first colonel. However, he was arrested shortly before his death. On 2 April 1674, he married Mary Maule, daughter of George Maule, 2nd Earl of Panmure. Their son John Erskine succeeded to the title. Charles Erskine, Lord Tinwald
Charles Erskine also spelled Areskine (1680 – 5 April 1763), of Tinwald and Barjarg, Dumfries, and Alva, Clackmannan was Lord Advocate, a Scottish judge, and a politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1722 to 1742. Life Erskine was the fourth son of Sir Charles Erskine, 1st Baronet, of Alva, Clackmannanshire and his wife Christian Dundas, daughter of Sir James Dundas, Lord Arniston. His older brothers included Robert Erskine, physician to Peter the Great. Charles was educated at the High School of Edinburgh and studied Law at Edinburgh University from 1693. At the age of 20 he was a candidate for the office of one of the four Regents of the University of Edinburgh, and after an examination with several competitors obtained that appointment on 26 November 1700 until 17 October 1707. Charles Erskine (1716–1749)
Charles Erskine (21 October 1716 – 25 June 1749) was a Scottish lawyer and politician. He sat in the House of Commons of Great Britain from 1747 to 1749. The oldest son of Charles Erskine, Lord Tinwald, he was educated at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge and at the Middle Temple, where he was called to the bar in 1739. He was called to Lincoln's Inn in 1743. At the 1747 general election he was returned by the 3rd Duke of Argyll as Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayr Burghs. However, he died only two years later, aged 32. Charles Erskine (cardinal)
Charles Erskine (13 February 1739 - 20 March 1811) was an Italian-Scottish papal diplomat and cardinal. Life He was the son of Mr. Colin Erskine, youngest son to Alexander Erskine of Cambo and maternal grandson of Alexander Erskine, 3rd Earl of Kellie, by his marriage to Agatha Gigli of the noble family of Gigli of Anagni. He was educated by Cardinal Henry, Duke of York, at the Scots College, Rome, and was afterwards a successful advocate, becoming a Doctor of Laws in 1770. Pope Pius VI made him pro (''pro tem'')-Auditor and Promoter of the Faith in 1782, also a domestic prelate, canon of St. Peter's Basilica, and Dean of the college of consistorial advocates. He was installed as a subdeacon on 28 August 1783. In October 1793, Erskine was sent as papal envoy to Great Britain.
