Charles Elliott (New Zealand Politician)
Charles Elliott (22 September 1811 – 5 July 1876) was a New Zealand politician and newspaper proprietor. Commercial career Elliott was born in Barnstaple in North Devon in 1811. He and his brother James came to New Zealand on the ''Mary Jane''; the ship left the West India Docks in London in September 1841 and arrived in Nelson Harbour on 10 February 1842. Having brought a printing press with him, Elliott established '' The Nelson Examiner and New Zealand Chronicle'' in 1842; this was the first newspaper in the South Island. In August 1842, he opened a bookshop in Nelson, one of the first in New Zealand. He held a sheep station in the Awatere Valley. He was particularly interested in horse racing and wrote for other publications under the pen name "Cheval". He published texts written by the suffragist Mary Müller, to whom he was related through marriage, in his newspaper. Waimea (New Zealand Electorate)
Waimea was a parliamentary electorate in the Nelson Province of New Zealand, from 1853 to 1887. Initially represented by two members, it was a single-member electorate from 1861. Geographic coverage Waimea was located in the northern part of the South Island, facing the Tasman Bay / Te Tai-o-Aorere. It is the area around the town (and since 1874 city) of Nelson, but excluded Nelson itself. It includes Wakefield, Brightwater, Richmond and smaller settlements north of Nelson. It was named after the Waimea River. History Waimea was represented by eleven Members of Parliament. Four members were nominated for the inaugural : David Monro, William Cautley, Charles Elliott, and John Saxton. Whilst Elliott and Saxton subsequently withdrew, Monro and Cautley wanted to go ahead with the poll held on 16 August, as one had been demanded on behalf of the other candidates. William Travers (New Zealand Politician)
William Thomas Locke Travers (January 1819 – 23 April 1903) was a New Zealand lawyer, politician, explorer, and naturalist. Early life Travers was born near Newcastle West, County Limerick, Ireland, either on 9 or 19 January 1819. His father chose to retire to France, and Travers was consequently brought up there. He was educated in Saint-Malo, a town in Brittany. In 1835, he joined the British military, and was part of the British Auxiliary Legion that fought in Spain's First Carlist War. After his military service ended, Travers became a lawyer. In 1849, he and his family moved to Nelson, New Zealand, where he continued to practice law. Later, he also lived in Christchurch and Wellington. He purchased Englefield Lodge in Christchurch in 1866 and sold the property in 1872 to Edward Stevens.
