Surry County is a county located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 71,359. Its county seat is Dobson, and its largest city is Mount Airy. Surry county comprises the Mount Airy, NC Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Greensboro-Winston-Salem- High Point, NC Combined Statistical Area. History The county was formed in 1771 from Rowan County as part of the British Province of North Carolina. It was named for the county of Surrey in England, birthplace of William Tryon, Governor of North Carolina from 1765 to 1771. In 1777 parts of Surry County and Washington District (now Washington County, Tennessee) were combined to form Wilkes County. William Smith "Bill" Monroe (; September 13, 1911 – September 9, 1996) was an American mandolinist, singer, and songwriter, who created the bluegrass music genre. Because of this, he is often called the " Father of Bluegrass". The genre takes its name from his band, the Blue Grass Boys, who named their group for the bluegrass of Monroe's home state of Kentucky. WSVS (800 AM) is a classic country and bluegrass formatted broadcast radio station licensed to Crewe, Virginia, serving Southside Virginia. WSVS is owned and operated by Gee Communications, Inc. History WSVS began broadcasting April 4, 1947, on a frequency of 650 kHz. Formal dedication ceremonies, held April 6, 1947, included transcribed speeches by government officials and broadcasts from the station's studios in Crewe, Blackstone and Farmville. The station was licensed to Southern Virginia Broadcasting Company. In 1955, WSVS received the Douglas Southall Freeman Award for public service in radio journalism from the Virginia Associated Press Broadcasters. The award was for the station's coverage of three hurricanes, Connie, Diane and Hazel. A disc jockey, more commonly abbreviated as DJ, is a person who plays recorded music for an audience. Drifting Cowboys
The Drifting Cowboys were the backing group for American country legend and singer-songwriter Hank Williams. The band went through several lineups during Williams' career. The original lineup was formed in 1937, changing musicians from show to show until Williams signed with Sterling Records. The lineup was further modified in the following years, with the most famous version of the group formed in 1949 for Williams' appearance on the ''Grand Ole Opry''. Although the Drifting Cowboys were credited on Williams' records, until 1950, Williams was backed by session musicians on recordings, with the label crediting the Cowboys. In 1951, Williams disbanded the group. After his death, the band was used for a short time by Ray Price. Former members later toured under the name of the band.
