Charles Davis Jameson
Charles Davis Jameson (February 24, 1827 – November 6, 1862) was an American Civil War general and Democratic Party candidate for Governor of Maine. He contracted "camp fever" (typhoid) at the Battle of Fair Oaks, returned to his native state of Maine, dying in transit or soon after. Jameson was born in Gorham, Maine, but his family moved to the lumbering and sawmilling center of Old Town, Maine when he was still a child. Jameson became a successful lumberman, and in 1860 was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention from Maine. With the outbreak of war in 1861 he was elected Colonel commanding the 2nd Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment, the first Maine unit to leave the state for the front. He led his regiment into the First Battle of Bull Run and was soon made Brigadier General of Volunteers. Gorham is a town in Cumberland County, Maine, United States. The population was 18,336 at the 2020 United States Census. In addition to its urban village center known as Gorham Village or simply "the Village," the town encompasses a number of smaller, unincorporated villages and hamlets with distinct historical identities, including South Gorham, West Gorham, Little Falls, White Rock, and North Gorham. Gorham is home to one of the three campuses of the University of Southern Maine. In 2013, Gorham was voted second-best town in Maine after Hampden by a financial website. Abner Coburn
Abner Coburn (March 22, 1803 – January 4, 1885) was the 30th Governor of Maine from 1863 to 1864 and a prominent individual in Skowhegan, Maine until his death. Early years Coburn was born on a farm in Old Canaan (later renamed to Skowhegan). He was raised with Puritan values and worked on his family farm from a young age which lead to him being known as an exceedingly industrious man. Career Coburn's family were Federalists and he cast his first vote for president in 1824 for John Quincy Adams. He went on to join the Whig Party and was an early member of the Maine Republican Party. Coburn served three years in the Maine House of Representatives before being elected Governor in 1863. He called for prisoners at the Maine State Prison to be leased to contractors instead of the State itself using them for manufacturing. Orono, Maine
Orono () is a town in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. Located on the Penobscot and Stillwater rivers, it was first settled by American colonists in 1774. They named it in honor of Chief Joseph Orono, a sachem of the indigenous Penobscot nation who long occupied this territory. In the nineteenth century, the town became a center of the lumber industry. Sawmills on the rivers were powered by the water, and logs were floated downriver on the Penobscot for shipping and export from coastal ports.
