Charles C. Fleek
Charles Clinton "Chalky" Fleek (August 28, 1947 – May 27, 1969) was a United States Army soldier and a posthumous recipient of the United States military's highest decoration—the Medal of Honor—for his actions in the Vietnam War. Biography Fleek joined the Army from Cincinnati, Ohio in 1968, and by May 27, 1969, was serving as a sergeant in Company C, 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division. During a firefight on that day, in Bình Dương Province, Republic of Vietnam, Fleek used his helmet to scoop up an enemy-thrown hand grenade. The grenade exploded before he could get it away from his body, sacrificing his life to protect those around him. Fleek, aged 21 at his death, was buried at Burlington Cemetery in Burlington, Kentucky. On August 17, 2018, a section of state highway Kentucky Route 20 in Petersburg, was named the Charles "Chalky" Fleek Memorial Highway. Petersburg is a rural unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Boone County, Kentucky, United States. As of the 2010 census Petersburg, along with its surrounding areas that use the 41080 zip code, had a population of 620. It is located 25 miles away from Cincinnati, Ohio. Archaeological evidence reveals an ancient Indian settlement was located at Petersburg town site. The first white settlement at Petersburg was Tanner's Station, an outpost founded before 1790. Tanner's station was the first settlement in Boone County, KY. Tanner's Station was renamed Petersburg in 1814. The Bullittsburg Baptist Church was founded outside the former hamlets of Utzinger and Gainesville/Idewild, east and north of Petersburg, in 1794. A grenade is an explosive weapon typically thrown by hand (also called hand grenade), but can also refer to a shell (explosive projectile) shot from the muzzle of a rifle (as a rifle grenade) or a grenade launcher. Burlington is a census-designated place (CDP) in and the county seat of Boone County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 15,926 at the 2010 census. History Burlington was incorporated in 1824. Burlington marks the county seat of Boone County. In June 1799, Boone County’s first court was set on 74 acres at the headwaters of Allens Fork. Known as Craig’s Camp, the county seat was named after early settler John Hawkins Craig. The next year, John Craig and Robert Johnson donated 74 acres at the Woolper Creek site for a town they called Wilmington. Court was held here in a log courthouse in January 1801 and the town was platted that September. The streets originally circled central “Publick Square,” but later two roads cut through it.
