Charles B. Eichelberger
Charles Bell Eichelberger (November 19, 1934 – December 27, 2021) was an officer in the United States Army. From November 22, 1989 to September 30, 1991, Eichelberger, then a lieutenant general, served as the deputy chief of staff for intelligence, Headquarters, Department of the Army. He is credited with providing high quality military intelligence support for Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Born and raised in LaGrange, Georgia, Eichelberger is a 1952 graduate of LaGrange High School, where he was known as Charlie. He subsequently attended Georgia Military College and enlisted in the Army after graduating in 1955. Eichelberger was commissioned after completing Infantry Officers' Candidate School in January 1957. He later completed a B.S. degree in law enforcement and corrections at the University of Nebraska and earned an M.A. degree in education administration from Pepperdine University. Arlington National Cemetery
Arlington National Cemetery is one of two national cemeteries run by the United States Army. Nearly 400,000 people are buried in its 639 acres (259 ha) in Arlington, Virginia. There are about 30 funerals conducted on weekdays and 7 held on Saturday. The other Army cemetery is in Washington, D.C. and is called the U.S. Soldiers' and Airmen's Home National Cemetery. All other national cemeteries are run by the National Cemetery System of the Department of Veterans Affairs. Arlington National Cemetery was established during the U.S. Civil War after the land the cemetery was built upon, Arlington Estate, was confiscated from private ownership following a tax dispute. Defense Meritorious Service Medal
The Defense Meritorious Service Medal (DMSM) is an award bestowed upon members of the United States military by the United States Department of Defense. In the order of precedence of the United States Armed Forces, it is worn between the Purple Heart and the Meritorious Service Medal. The medal is awarded in the name of the Secretary of Defense to members of the Armed Forces who, while serving in a joint activity, distinguish themselves by non-combat outstanding achievement or meritorious service, but not of a degree to warrant award of the Defense Superior Service Medal. The medal is not the same as the Meritorious Service Medal, which is a separate federal military decoration. Both have virtually identical award criteria, but the DMSM is awarded to service members assigned to joint, multi-service organizations, while the MSM is awarded to service members in traditional military units within their respective individual services.
