Charles Arbuthnot
Charles Arbuthnot (14 March 1767 – 18 August 1850) was a British diplomat and Tory politician. He was Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire between 1804 and 1807 and held a number of political offices. He was a good friend of the Duke of Wellington. His second wife, Harriet, became a hostess at Wellington's society dinners, and wrote an important diary cataloging contemporary political intrigues. Background Arbuthnot was son of John Arbuthnot, FRS of Rockfleet, and his wife Anne Stone, daughter of the banker Robert Stone; he was brother of bishop Alexander Arbuthnot, General Sir Thomas Arbuthnot and General Sir Robert Arbuthnot. He was born in Rockfleet, County Mayo, Ireland, but much of his upbringing was with Andrew Stone, his mother's relation. He was educated at Westminster School, and matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford in 1784, graduating B.A. in 1788. He then went on a Grand Tour. Charles Arbuthnot (abbot)
Charles Arbuthnot ( – 19 April 1820) was a renowned Scottish abbot of the Scots Monastery, Regensburg, and a leading Bavarian mathematician of his time. Biography The son of James Arbuthnot, Senior of West Rora in Aberdeenshire and Margaret Gordon, he was baptized in Longside on . He was brought up in the Roman Catholic faith and was sent to Germany aged 11 to be educated there. He afterwards won for himself a reputation as a scientist, mathematician, natural philosopher and chemist besides being renowned for his piety, learning, breadth of mind and benevolence of heart. In 1757, Arbuthnot became a member of the Benedictine Order and a member of the Monastery of St James, known as the Scots College at Regensburg. Under the name Benedict, he spent the rest of his life at Regensburg, other than a brief visit to Scotland in 1772. His father died in 1770 and he refused his share in his estate. Charles George Arbuthnot
Lieutenant General Sir Charles George Arbuthnot (19 May 1824 – 14 April 1899) was a British Army officer. He served in the Royal Artillery in the Crimean War and rose to become a senior officer in British India. Early life Arbuthnot was born on 19 May 1824 and was a twin, the son of Alexander Arbuthnot, Bishop of Killaloe. His older brother, Alexander John Arbuthnot, became a senior civil servant in India. His half-brother, George Bingham Arbuthnot, was an honorary major general and Colonel of the Madras Light Cavalry in India. He was educated at Rugby and attended the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. Military career Arbuthnot was commissioned as second lieutenant in the Royal Artillery on 17 June 1843. He served in the Crimean War as a captain in the 10th Battalion of the Royal Artillery. General Charles George James Arbuthnot, DL (180121 October 1870) was a British general. Early life Arbuthnot was born at sea aboard the frigate ''Juno'' and raised at Woodford, Northamptonshire. His father, Charles Arbuthnot, was a prominent Tory politician, diplomat and confidant of the Duke of Wellington. He was made a Page of Honour to George III in 1812 (at the age of eleven or twelve). Military career Arbuthnot was made an Ensign in the Grenadier Guards in 1816, was promoted to Captain of the 28th Regiment in 1820, and was made lieutenant colonel of the 72nd Regiment in 1825. He was returned to Parliament from the rotten borough of Tregony in 1831, but resigned the seat in the following year by becoming Steward of the Manor of East Hundred. Charles Ramsay Arbuthnot
Admiral Charles Ramsay Arbuthnot (5 February 1850 – 30 September 1913) was an officer of the British Royal Navy. Biography Arbuthnot was born in Liverpool, England, the son of George Clerk Arbuthnot (1803–1876) of Marisbank, Midlothian, (the third son of Sir William Arbuthnot, 1st Baronet), by his second wife Caroline Ramsay, daughter of James Hay of Collepriest, and Lady Mary Ramsay, the fourth daughter of George Ramsay, 6th Earl of Dalhousie. Arbuthnot entered the Royal Navy as a cadet in September 1863, aged 13, and was commissioned as a sub-lieutenant in December 1869. He was promoted to the rank of lieutenant from the Royal Yacht on 7 September 1871. In 1875–76 he served aboard the yacht in the Arctic, earning the Arctic Medal. Charles Mertz "C. M." Arbuthnot was an early physician, pharmacist and founder of the Arbuthnot Drug Company in Republic County, Kansas, one of the first to establish a practice in the county. Biography He was born in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania in 1852, and his family came to Kansas in 1871 by way of Iowa. While he was young, Arbuthnot remained at home helping his father on the family farm while also teaching in the district schools until 1875. He then attended Leavenworth Normal School, then a principal at public school in Peabody, Kansas for two years. While working through his education and teaching, Arbuthnot had been studying medical books.
