Charles A. Chickering
Charles Addison Chickering (November 26, 1843 – February 13, 1900) was a U.S. Representative from New York. Life Born in Harrisburg, New York, Chickering attended the common schools and Lowville Academy and was for some time a teacher in that institution. He engaged in business as a hardware merchant. He served as school commissioner of Lewis County 1865–1875. He was a member of the New York State Assembly (Lewis Co.) in 1879, 1880 and 1881; and was Clerk of the Assembly from 1884 to 1890. He served as chairman of the Lewis County Republican committee. He served as member of the Republican State committee, serving as secretary, and as a member of its executive committee. Chickering was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-third and to the three succeeding Congresses and served from March 4, 1893, until his accidental death from injuries received in a fall from a window of the Grand Union Hotel in New York City while on a business trip February 13, 1900. Harrisburg is a rural small town in Lewis County, New York, United States. The population was 437 at the 2010 census. The town is in the northwestern part of the county, northwest of Lowville, the county seat. History Settlement began before 1812. The town of Harrisburg (originally "Harrisburgh") was formed in 1803 from the towns of Lowville, Champion (in Jefferson County), and Mexico (in Oswego County). After its formation, Harrisburg gave up land to form the town of Denmark (1807) and the town of Pinckney (1808). Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which , or 0.08%, are water. The 53rd United States Congress was a meeting of the legislative branch of the United States federal government, consisting of the United States Senate and the United States House of Representatives. It met in Washington, D.C. from March 4, 1893, to March 4, 1895, during the first two years of Grover Cleveland's second presidency. The apportionment of seats in the House of Representatives was based on the Eleventh Census of the United States in 1890. The Democrats maintained their majority in the House (albeit reduced) and won back control of the Senate. With Grover Cleveland being sworn in on March 4, 1895 for his second stint as President, this also gave the Democrats an overall federal government trifecta for the first time since the establishment of the Republican Party in 1854. Copenhagen is a village in Lewis County, New York, United States. The village is situated between Watertown and Lowville. The population was 631 at the 2020 census. The village is named after Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark. Copenhagen is in the town of Denmark and is northwest of Lowville. History Copenhagen was formerly known as "Mungers Mills".
