Charlene Garcia Simms (born 1952) is a teacher-librarian from Garcia, Colorado. She and her husband founded El Escritorio Publishing which focuses on Southwest history and genealogy. Biography Charlene Garcia Simms grew up in Garcia, Colorado. She is a relation of Maria Josefa Jaramillo Carson, the third wife of Kit Carson. She was married to Eduard Simms. Expanded description She received an MBA from Colorado State University Pueblo, and earned her Master's of Library Science from the University of Arizona. While at Arizona, she was a Knowledge River Scholar. Garcia Simms and her husband are the co-owners of El Escritorio Publishing. Maria Josefa Jaramillo Carson
Maria Josefa Jaramillo Carson (March 19, 1828 - April 27, 1868) was the third wife of frontiersman Kit Carson. Early life Maria Josefa Jaramillo was born on March 19, 1828, at Santa Cruz de la Cañada, in the Rio Grande Valley near Taos. Her father was Francisco Jaramillo, a respected merchant, and her mother was Maria Apolonia Vigil. Both the Jaramillo and Vigil families were prominent in the Taos area. They owned land in the Rio Grande Valley, and moved to Taos when she was an infant. Her ancestors had migrated from Mexico City and Zacatecas to New Mexico during the Spanish reconquest in the 1690s. Adult life Jaramillo met Carson in 1842 when she was 14 years old. They were introduced by Governor Charles Bent, who married Jaramillo's sister, Maria Ignacia. Kit Carson
Christopher Houston Carson (December 24, 1809 – May 23, 1868) was an American frontiersman. He was a fur trapper, wilderness guide, Indian agent, and U.S. Army officer. The Colorado State Fair is an event held annually in late August in Pueblo, Colorado. The state fair has been a tradition since October 9, 1872. The fairgrounds also host a number of other events during the rest of the year. Organizationally, the fair is one of the divisions of the Colorado Department of Agriculture. History When Colorado became a state in 1876, its state fair was already earning its place in history. In 1869, approximately two thousand people converged on what is now Pueblo for a horse exhibition; from that meager beginning was born the Colorado State Fair. There were cancellations in 1917–18 and 1942–45. 2020 saw drive-thru fair food and limited exhibitions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In November 2019, the Colorado State Fair was audited by the Colorado General Assembly. Olibama Lopez Tushar (1906 – 2004) was an American scholar of Hispanic heritage in Colorado. Her book, ''The People of El Valle,'' is influential in the history and genealogy of the San Luis Valley. Biography Olibama Lopez was born on January 2, 1906, at Los Rincones near Manassa, Colorado. Her parents were Fernandez B. Lopez and Josefina Manzanares, and she had one brother. She descended from Spanish settlers from New Mexico that migrated to the San Luis Valley in 1849 as part of the Sangre de Cristo Land Grant. When she was 6 years old in 1912, her family moved to Zarephath, New Jersey, before returning to the San Luis Valley within 2 years. Her family moved to Denver, Colorado, to give her a better education, where they attended private school. The family spent the school year in Denver and returned to Mogote, Colorado, during summers.
