Charean Williams is an American sportswriter for NBC Sports. Career Williams graduated from Texas A&M University in 1986. From 1999 to 2017, she covered the Dallas Cowboys for the ''Fort Worth Star-Telegram''. Williams is the first woman to have a vote for the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the first woman to serve as president of the Pro Football Writers Association. The ''Fort Worth Star-Telegram'' is an American daily newspaper serving Fort Worth and Tarrant County, the western half of the North Texas area known as the Metroplex. It is owned by The McClatchy Company. History In May 1905, Amon G. Carter accepted a job as an advertising space salesman in Fort Worth. A few months later, he agreed to help finance and run a new newspaper in town. The ''Fort Worth Star'' printed its first newspaper on February 1, 1906, with Carter as the advertising manager. The ''Star'' lost money, and was in danger of going bankrupt when Carter had an audacious idea: raise additional money and purchase his newspaper's main competition, the ''Fort Worth Telegram''. The Pro Football Writers of America (PFWA), sometimes known as Pro Football Writers Association, is an organization that purports to be " heofficial voice of pro football writers, promoting and fighting for access to NFL personnel to best serve the public." Goals of the organization include improving access to practices and locker rooms, developing working relationships with all teams, and ensuring that football writers are treated in a professional manner. The Bill Nunn Jr. Award is bestowed annually by the Professional Football Writers of America (PFWA) to a reporter for their "long and distinguished contribution to pro football through coverage". It is named after Bill Nunn Jr., who worked for 22 years at the ''Pittsburgh Courier''. The award was created in 1969 and was originally named after Dick McCann, who was the first director of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Presentation of the award is made annually at the Pro Football Hall Enshrinement Ceremony. Prior to 2014, the presentation was made at the Enshrinees Dinner.
