Chapman, Kansas
Chapman is a city in Dickinson County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 1,377. History The first settlement was made at Chapman in 1868, and the same year Jackman's mill was built on Chapman creek a little northeast of the present town. James Streeter and S. M. Strickler laid out the town in 1871. It was named from the Chapman Creek. The first post office at Chapman was established in 1866, but the post office was given the name Chapman's Creek until 1872. 2008 tornado On the evening of June 11, 2008, a ½-mile wide tornado swept through Chapman. The tornado moved from the southwest side of town, through the central business district, and then on out of town. Many buildings and structures in the town suffered extensive damage; most of the downtown area was obliterated and over 60 homes were destroyed. Buckeye is an unincorporated community in Dickinson County, Kansas, United States. History Buckeye was started as a colony/settlement by Universalist preacher Vear P. Wilson. Buckeye colony had nearly two hundred settlers and a church built by 1870. Buckeye had a post office from 1900 until 1904. The Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) is the organization which oversees interscholastic competition in the U.S. state of Kansas at the high school, high-school level. It oversees both athletic and non-athletic competition, and sponsors championships in several sports and activities. History The Kansas State High School Activities Association was formed in 1937 and incorporated in 1956. As early as 1910, Kansas schools organized the statewide Debate League and Athletic Association governed by high school principals. The Athletic Association started as a small voluntary group of fewer than 50 schools and grew to more than 500 schools by the 1920s. Out of necessity, the member schools adopted eligibility and participation rules and established authority for a Board of Control to assess penalties against schools for violations. Abilene (pronounced ) is a city in, and the county seat of, Dickinson County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 6,460. It is home of The Dwight D. K-18 is a , west–east state highway in the U.S. State of Kansas. K-18's western terminus is at U.S. Route 24 (US-24) near Bogue and the eastern terminus is at K-99 south of Wamego. Chapman High School is a public secondary school in Chapman, Kansas, United States. It is the sole high school operated by Chapman USD 473 school district. The mascot for CHS athletic teams is the Fighting Irish. Students come to CHS from Chapman Middle School which is fed by elementary schools throughout Dickinson County, Kansas. There are four other districts in Dickinson County History Originally named Dickinson County Community High School, the high school was established in 1889 as the nation's first county high school. In 1961, a second high school was completed, which replaced the 1880s school. In 1966, USD 473 was created by the merging of 11 grade schools and this high school.
