Cashmere Goat
A cashmere goat is a type of goat that produces cashmere wool, the goat's fine, soft, downy, winter undercoat, in commercial quality and quantity. This undercoat grows as the day length shortens and is associated with an outer coat of coarse hair, which is present all the year and is called guard hair. Most common goat breeds, including dairy goats, grow this two-coated fleece. The down is produced by secondary follicles, the guard hair by the primary follicles. In 1994, China had an estimated population of 123 million goats and is the largest producer of cashmere down. Local breeds are dominant. Turfani pashm or Kuchari Pashm or Turfani wool is a type of shawl wool obtained from Tibetan goats. It was imported to India from Yarkant and Changtang (Chinese Tibet). The wool was considered valuable for certain shawls. Quality Turfani was one of the finest cashmere wool. Imports Turfani wool was imported in large quantities into Leh and in Ladakh from Changtang . Changthang
The Changtang (alternatively spelled Changthang or Qangtang) is a part of the high altitude Tibetan Plateau in western and northern Tibet extending into the southern edges of Xinjiang as well as southeastern Ladakh, India, with vast highlands and giant lakes. William "Billy" Windsor I is a cashmere goat who served as a Lance corporal#United Kingdom, lance corporal in the 1st Battalion, the Royal Welsh, an infantry battalion of the British Army.
