Chandor Gardens
Chandor Gardens is a historic garden established in Weatherford, Texas, US, by the British-born portrait painter Douglas Chandor (1897–1953) in 1936. Originally named White Shadows, it was renamed by his widow Ina Kuteman after his death in 1953, and kept open to the public until her death in 1978. The gardens were neglected until 1994, when Melody and Chuck Bradford bought them and spent a year cleaning and repairing the gardens and Chandor's house and studio, and began hosting weddings and garden tours. In 2002, the City of Weatherford acquired Chandor Gardens. Weatherford, Texas
Weatherford ( ) is a city and the county seat of Parker County, Texas, United States. In 2020, its population was 30,854. Weatherford is named after Thomas J. Weatherford, a State senator and advocate for Texas’ secession to the Confederate States. History Beginnings In 1854, Methodist Reverend Pleasant Tackett led 15 pioneer families into a land they called " Goshen," which would later become part of Parker County, itself to be created the following year by the efforts of State Representative Isaac Parker and State Senator Thomas Jefferson Weatherford in the Texas State Legislature. Evidence of a prior, failed attempt to colonize the region can be found in the abandoned cabin from 1852-53 located south of modern Weatherford on the J.H. Voorhies farm. Douglas Chandor
Douglas Granville Chandor (20 August 1897 – 13 January 1953) was a British-born American painter of portraits, of which he created more than 200. His early paintings included two of the Prince of Wales (the future Edward VIII). In 1923, he was commissioned to paint the '' British Empire Prime Ministers During the Imperial Conference'' at 10 Downing Street. He later painted Winston Churchill and Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, and did a sketch of the "Big Three at Yalta", although the painting never happened. His 1952 portrait of Elizabeth II is in the British Government Art Collection, and is the first painted portrait for which she sat following her accession. His other portraits include Sara Delano Roosevelt, U.S. president Herbert Hoover, and U.S. financier and statesman Bernard Baruch.
