''Bright Eyes'' is a 1929 British-Austrian silent romance film directed by Géza von Bolváry Géza von Bolváry (born Géza Gyula Mária Bolváry Zahn, german: Géza Maria von Bolváry-Zahn; 26 December 1897 – 10 August 1961) was a Hungarians, Hungarian actor, screenwriter, and film director, who worked principally in Germany and Aust ... and starring Betty Balfour, Jack Trevor, and Fritz Greiner. It is also known under the alternative title of ''Champagner''. The film was a co-production between British International Pictures and Sascha-Film. Bolváry directed the film after travelling to Britain to make '' The Wrecker'' and stayed on to make another film, '' The Vagabond Queen'', before returning to Germany. Franz Schulz
Franz Schulz (born 22 March 1897 in Prague, Austria-Hungary, died 4 May 1971, in Muralto, Ticino, Tessin, Switzerland) was a playwright and screenwriter who worked from 1920 through 1956. Biography Schulz was born into a wealthy family, and although of the Jewish faith, religion played no role in the family. His father was a lawyer and a college friend of the writer Friedrich Adler (writer), Friedrich Adler. Lucia, one of his sisters, was the first wife of the painter László Moholy-Nagy. As a high school student Schultz studied the works of Max Brod, Egon Erwin Kisch, Franz Kafka, Paul Leppin, and Franz Werfel. Schulz graduated in 1915 from the Charles University in Prague and entered the army shortly thereafter. After release from service, he went to Berlin where he worked from 1918 to 1920 as a journalist, until writing for film. Betty Balfour (born Florence Lilian Woods; 27 March 1902 – 4 November 1977) was an English screen actress, popular during the silent era, and known as the "British Mary Pickford" and "Britain's Queen of Happiness". She was best known to audiences for her '' Squibs'' series of films. Life and career Balfour was the most popular actress in Britain in the 1920s, and in 1927 she was named by the ''Daily Mirror'' as the country's favourite world star. Her talent was most evident in the ''Squibs'' comedy series produced by George Pearson, while in his '' Love, Life and Laughter'' (1923), rediscovered in 2014, and ''Reveille'' (1924), she demonstrated a serious side to her character. Her role as a wealthy heiress in '' Somebody's Darling'' (1925) was an attempt to break out of her previous role as Squibs, to avoid typecasting. Biography Géza von Bolváry was born in Budapest. He attended the Imperial Military Academy in Budapest and subsequently served in the Hungarian army (Honved Hussars). After World War I he left military service with the rank of Royal Hungarian ''Rittmeister''. He then earned his living in the new Hungarian film industry. He began his career in about 1920 as an actor in various silent films, but soon changed to the Star-Film company, where he was first active as a director and made his debut as director and screenwriter with ''A Kétarcú asszony''.
