Chambas
Chambas is a municipality and town in the Ciego de Ávila Province of Cuba. Geography It is located in the northern part of the province, bordering the municipalities of Morón and Florencia, as well as the province of Sancti Spíritus. To the north it borders the Bay of Buena Vista and the Laguna de Leche. It comprises the villages of El Asiento, El Calvario, Falla, Kilo 9, Las Palmas, Los Perros, Mabuya, Piedra, Punta Alegre, Punta San Juan (Maxímo Gómez Sugar Mill) and Ranchuelo. Falla (Chambas)
Falla is a Cuban village and ''consejo popular'' ("people's council", i.e. hamlet) of the municipality of Chambas, in Ciego de Ávila Province. In 2011 it had a population of about 8,789. History Founded in 1912 as the '' hacienda'' Nauyús y Cacarratas, owned by Pepe Planas, a man linked to Falla-Gutiérrez sugar company. After his death (shot by unknown), the Laureano Falla-Gutiérrez Association, which would extend it for the delivery of land made by the President of the Republic, Alfredo Zayas, is in charge of the hacienda. The concession of the latifundium extended the sugarcane monoculture in the area and, with it, the development of the current urban settlement. After the Cuban Revolution, and following the creation of "people's councils" (''consejos populares''), the one of Falla was named Enrique Varona after Enrique Varona González, a Cuban trade union leader and socialist killed in 1920. Florencia, Cuba
Florencia () is a municipality and town in the Ciego de Ávila Province of Cuba. It is located in the western part of the province, south of Chambas. This municipality merged in 1976 as result of the new political and administrative division of Cuba. Florencia was formerly the barrios of Guadalupe, Tamarindo and Marroquí which were separated from the municipality of Morón. Overview The municipality is a mountain region with rivers, forest and caves with subterranean rivers. A huge hydraulic complex was constructed under Fidel's government in 1991 named "Liberación de Florencia" ("Florencia Independence") since the Florencia area was the first quarter taken by local revolutionary forces in the province of Camagüey on December 14, 1958. El Asiento, Cuba
El Asiento is a ward () and village in the municipality of Chambas, Ciego de Ávila Province, Cuba. Kilo 9
Kilo 9 is a village in the Ciego de Ávila Province of Cuba part of the municipality of Chambas. Geography Kilo 9 is located in the northwest plain of Chambas municipality which covers over . It is bordered by Loma de Cunagua on the east, Alturas de Florencia on the west, Nauvy Bay on the north and Alturas de Pina on the south. The village is 26 km from Morón. One small river crosses nearby; the Rio Del Calvario (40 km) which runs from the Lake of Virgil to the Laguna de Leche (i.e. "Milky Lake"), in Morón. History It was established around 1930's by the Fallas-Gutierrez sugar company when an 18 kilometers railroad was built across, which runs from Adelaida Sugar mill (Fallas) to the Port of Chicola. Ciego De Ávila Province
Ciego de Ávila () is one of the provinces of Cuba, and was previously part of Camagüey Province. Its capital is Ciego de Ávila, which lies on the Carretera Central (central highway), and the second city is Morón, further north. The province was separated from Camagüey Province in 1975 by the government. Geography Off the north coast of the province, some (cays) of the Jardines del Rey archipelago are being developed as tourist resorts, principally Cayo Coco and Cayo Guillermo. The south coast is characterised by mangroves. Morón, Cuba
Morón is a city and a municipality in Ciego de Ávila Province in central Cuba. It is one of ten municipalities in the province, and is the second in importance and the oldest. Morón is the closest city to the tourist resorts on Cayo Coco and Cayo Guillermo. The Bay of Buena Vista ( es, Bahía de Buena Vista) is a bay on Cuba's northern Atlantic shore. It is located in the northern part of the provinces of Sancti Spíritus, Villa Clara and Ciego de Ávila, between mainland Cuba and the archipelago that lines its northern coast. Chicola
Chicola was a small port on the north coast of the Fallas, Cuba. It was built in 1932 by the Fallas-Gutiérrez sugar company to ship to the US the sugar produced by the factories of Central Patria and Central Adelaida. It is located on a bay in front of Cayo Coco island, near the Laguna de Leche, at c. 30 km north-west of Morón, Ciego de Ávila Province. History The name came from the Spanish word (chico), which means "small" or "tight". The only access to Chicola was through 9 kilometers of railroad that ran, from Falla, on a heavily forested and swampy terrain. The sugar was carried in railroad wagons and then loaded onto flat-bottom boats to be taken over 25 miles of shallow sea (6 feet) to deep ocean, (Cayo Guillermo), where it was transferred to big liners.
