Chalcis ( ; Ancient Greek & Katharevousa: , ) or Chalkida, also spelled Halkida (Modern Greek: , ), is the chief town of the island of Euboea or Evia in Greece, situated on the Euripus Strait at its narrowest point. The name is preserved from antiquity and is derived from the Greek χαλκός (copper, bronze), though there is no trace of any mines in the area. In the Late Middle Ages, it was known as Negropont(e), an Italian name that has also been applied to the entire island of Euboea. Chalcis or Chalkis ( grc, Χαλκίς), also called Chalceia (Χάλκεια) and Hypochalcis (Ὑποχαλκίς), was a town of ancient Aetolia, situated upon the coast, at a short distance east of the mouth of the Evenus, and at the foot of a mountain of the same name, whence it was called Hypochalcis. Chalcis Mountain
Varasova ( el, Βαράσοβα) is a limestone mountain in the southern part of Aetolia-Acarnania in western Greece. It was known as ''Chalcis'' ( grc, Χαλκίς) in antiquity, and there was an ancient Aetolian town at its foot named Chalcis, ''Hypochalcis'' or ''Chalceia'' (hence the name of the current administrative unit Chalkeia). It rises steeply from the coast of the Gulf of Patras to 917 m elevation. It is situated just east of the mouth of the river Evinos, 3 km east of Galatas, 14 km east of Missolonghi and 18 km northwest of Patras. 8 km to its east is the mountain Klokova.
